  1. Ms. Doherty’s 3rd Grade Class2010 - 2011 Welcome parents!

Welcome to Third Grade • Please sign in on the computer. • Volunteer opportunities can be found • In the tabs at the bottom of the page • On the back table • Please sign up for a conference time. • Have a seat at your child’s desk. • Each student wrote you a letter. Please read the letter and write back. It will be the first thing each student sees tomorrow morning.

  3. Welcome to Room 36 Who is Ms. Doherty?

  4. Classroom Rules • Don’t hurt anyone on the inside or outside. • Listen to the speaker. • Work quietly. • Raise your hand.

  5. Positive Behavior • I give stickers for positive behavior and when a student earns five, he/she will get a prize. At anytime during the week, a student may write a note about someone else in the class doing something nice. We read these notes on Friday afternoon. It is a fun way to end the week. Also, class points are awarded for many things. A class reward will be given when the designated number is reached.

  6. Consequences • 1st time: Warning - Name on the board. • 2nd time: The student will write a letter to parents describing actions. The letter will need to be signed and returned to school the next day. If someone else was affected by the incident, the child must also write an apology letter. In this letter they must apologize, right two positive things about the individual, and ask them a question. • 3rd time: In addition to writing their parents, the student will write a letter to the Assistant Principal. • - Severe disruption - Student will immediately be sent to the office.

  7. Reading A balanced or comprehensive literacy approach is used. This includes shared reading, guided reading and independent reading as well as read-alouds, literature study and explicit skills lessons. The Skills include the following: 1)Connecting 2)Predicting 3)Questioning 4)Inferring 5)Synthesizing/Visualization 6)Evaluating/Applying

  8. Writing • Writing Students write for many purposes with emphasis on explanatory and descriptive writing. Students also practice basic research skills, with an emphasis on information collection, summary and paraphrasing and identifying resources. • Writing Rubric • Grammar Usage & Mechanics • Word Study Approach Discovering patterns, rules and meaning. • Cursive Writing

  12. Interactive Notebooks • These notebooks will be completed using composition notebooks for each subject.  Ask your child to see and explain their interactive notebook to you. It is a learning process and requires time and several procedures.

  14. Homework • Homework is a nightly 30 minute process • Reading…Silently/Read Aloud- 15 minutes • Math- as needed/Investigations • Projects • Content based assignments • Word Study/Spelling Test every other Friday

Assessments • Assessments will be graded with A, B, C, D, and F. • Formative and summative assessments will be used • Observations • Discussions/conferences • Work samples • Verbal and nonverbal participation • Enrichment Opportunities • A copy of the report card as well as the guidelines for achievement marks (1, 2, 3, 4) are attached
