TE EPC Booster and PS LIU workunits EPC Project Meeting 06-09-2011 Serge Pittet
The LIU Project TE EPC “The LHC Injectors Upgrade should plan for delivering reliably to the LHC the beams required for reaching the goals of the HL-LHC. This includes LINAC4, the PS booster, the PS, the SPS, as well as the heavy ion chain.” D. Nisbet D. Nisbet (inj.) S. Pittet S.Pittet TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
LIU Project status TE EPC • RCS option studied and rejected. • LIU project approved in the 24th of august LMC. • Official date for project start on 1st of September 2011. • TDR to be completed by the end of 2011. • Startup of upgraded machines at the end of LS2 (2017?). • Some budget codes already funded. • WBS and WUs will soon be transferred in APT. LIU-PSB 5.2 - Booster MPS TE EPC • Civil engineering included. To be done in LS1 as far as possible. TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
POPS based Baseline TE EPC 64 BHZ Rings 1&4 GND Benefits • Overall voltage available increases and would allow a reduction of the RMS current using a faster ramping. • The capacitor bank totally absorbs the peak power on the 18kV network. Meyrin SVC would then become optional. • Spare sharing between MPS A and B and eventually with POPS. • Only a few new cables needed between the reference magnet (BCER) and the MPS. • New B-field regulation to minimize eddy currents and saturation effects impact at higher current and acceleration rate. Drawbacks • Cost estimation 14MCHF using POPS module. 128 QFO Rings 1,2,3&4 MPS A 2500V 5500A QFO 600V 450A Reference magnet Ring 1&4 Ring 1 B-filed measurement Reference magnet Ring 2&3 Ring 2 B-filed measurement 64 QDE Rings 1,2,3&4 MPS B 2500V 5500A QDE 600V 450A 64 BHZ Rings 2&3 GND TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
Layout of MPS new building TE EPC • 420m2 required, only 190m2 available in bdg. 271 ground floor. • Only 200kg/m2 allowed in bdg. 271 first floor. • No space left in bdg. 361. With this new building: • We can install and commission during Booster operation. • We have a backup power supply during the first years. • Easy connection to existing cables and cooling services. New MPSB (2 GeV) (26m x 16m) TT6 TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
LIU-PSB 5.2 – ALG1&2 TE EPC • The linear stage can handle the new rated current. • The capacitor bank size needs to be increased. TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
LIU-PSB 5.2 - Mididiscaps TE EPC • Design and production from Linac 4 project. TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
LIU-PSB 5.2 – Beam Transfer TE EPC • Optimization still need to be done: pulsing converters and keep existing magnets, BT.BHZ10 magnet design, 2GeV quadrupoles optic, reuse of some converters or spares TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
LIU-PS 5 – CBE TE EPC • Specification under study with OP. • ACAPULCO power design with FGC3 and RegFGC3. TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
LIU-PS 5 – PI.SMH42 TE EPC • 2 aimants en série • R bobinage: 2·0.08mOhms ≈ 0.2 mOhms • L aimant: 2·0.9uH ≈ 2uH • Inom: 31kA • Forme: Demi sinus+ 3ème harmonique + filtre actif • Largeur pulse demi sinus: 3ms TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
Related consolidation TE EPC • Some consolidation items which are essential for the LIU project have been pushed/advanced. • They have not been transferred and stay in S.Baird project. TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
Organization TE EPC • Bi-weekly LIU PSB project meetings followed by linkman. • Bi-weekly LIU PS project meetings followed by linkman. • EPC LIU project meetings in January, May and September with a shot presentation by each WU holder. • WU specific meetings when needed. TE-EPC - Serge Pittet
