Holy Roman Emperor vs. The Pope • Main Problem is with German rulers who controlled large sections of France and Northern Italy
Lay Investiture • Lay Person – Someone who is not a member of the clergy • Secular rulers had begun to “invest” bishops with symbols of their offices and power • This gives the monarch the appearance of more power than the pope • Gregory VII claims only the pope can install bishops into office
Why are Bishops Important • Very high on the Church hierarchy, only below the Pope and Cardinals • Were nobles and usually wealthy and held land. They held jurisdiction over large portions of the King’s land as well. • They were the “supervisors” of the priests – took care of all church business in the diocese • Sometimes led their knights into battles
Henry vs. Gregory • Feudalistic Society • Bishops hold royal fiefs which means they must answer to King Henry IV Gregory excommunicates Henry and Henry is forced to crawl back to Gregory VII Leads to the Concord of Worms
Concord of Worms • Worms – Vhorms • Church sole power to elect and invest bishops • Emperor could invest bishops with fiefs
