Earth Summit, 1992, Severn Cullis-Suzuki • Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death, Speech to Virginia Convention, 1775, Patrick Henry • Assignment • Choose one • Read and Analyze it for RHETORICAL ANALYSIS: logos, ethos, pathos, repetition, allusion, hyperbole, anaphora, apostrophe, alliteration, assonance, dramatic irony, euphemism, idiom, imagery, metaphor, personification, simile • Write a full rhetorical analysis, due at end of period Friday

Environmental SummitRio de Janeiro, 1992Severn Cullis-Suzuki • Born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia • At age 9, she founded the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a group of children dedicated to learning and teaching other youngsters about environmental issues. • In 1992, at age 12, Cullis-Suzuki raised money with members of ECO to attend the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro • Presented environmental issues from a youth perspective at the summit, where she was applauded for a speech to the delegates. • Since become known as "The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 Minutes" • 1993, she was honored in the United Nations Environment Programmer's Global 500 Roll of Honor • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQmz6Rbpnu0

Give Me Liberty or Give Me DeathVirginia Convention, 1775Patrick Henry • Lawyer, Politician, militia Colonel • At third Virginia Convention to discuss relations with Britain, whether or not to mobilize forces against them, gave this famous speech from a pew in his church • King George had declared states to be in a state of “open rebellion” and took all gunpowder • Patrick Henry forced the “Gunpowder Affair,” got the gunpowder back, became “Public Enemy No. 1” in eyes of British, stood for patriotism ever after • Best Line: "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?
