  1. Klaus Bollmann President & CEO – Ringdale ActiveLED Developer and Manufacturer of LED Light Fixtures The B.U.G. Rating System 1

  2. The original classifications included full cutoff, cutoff, semi-cutoff and non-cutoff. These were designed solely around street lighting applications. These designations were not accurate enough to meet the needs of projects in relation to light trespass, glare and night glow concerns. The Original IES Classification System 2

  3. The BUG system was developed by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) to make comparing and evaluating outdoor luminaires fast, easy and more complete than older systems. Work on the BUG system started in 2005 when the IES upgraded the original roadway shielding classification system. B.U.G. Ratings – Improved Evaluation Criteria 3

  4. ActiveLED Update The BUGacronym describes light escaping from an outdoor lighting luminaire in sectors. • “B” stands for backlight, or the light directed in back of a mounting pole. • “U” stands stands for uplight, or the light directed above the horizontal plane of the luminaire • “G” stands for glare, or the amount of light emitted from the luminaire at angles known to cause glare 4

  5. ActiveLED Update BUG ratings are not an absolute judge of a light’s requirements • B0-U0-G0 means there is no light above 60 degrees. • B1-U0-G1 is a rating typical for a commercial parking lot. It may be too dim for a large city center. 5

  6. Allows a specifying engineer to quickly determine the suitability of a light in respect of light trespass, glare or dark sky (up-shine) characteristics. BUG ratings provide backlight output, glare information and indicates how well the luminaire controls uplight. Presents an accurate picture of lumen distribution and overall efficiency of the luminaire Benefits of using the B.U.G. Rating System 6

  7. ActiveLED Update Application of BUG ratings for Dark Skies • Bx-U0-Gx – Must have a “U” rating of “0” resulting in NO uplight • The appropriate glare rating is determined by the community. 7

  8. BUG does not apply to residential or indoor lighting. The IDA Fixture Seal of Approval Program can be used to rate residential outdoor luminaires. Application of B.U.G. Rating for Residential and Indoor Lighting 8
