  3. Communists Take Over China! Mao Zedong, the leader of Communist forces in China’s civil war, has taken over the mainland. His Nationalist opponent, Chiang Kai-shek has fled to the island of Taiwan. This news comes as a shock to the U.S. who have been supplying Kai-shek with financial and military aid for many years. Mao’s victory, in May of 1949, was due to the overwhelming support of peasants to whom he promised education and land reform. Sadly, this win demonstrates the failure of the Truman Doctrine in Southeast Asia. Mao Zedong – Leader of People’s Republic of China
