  1. Michigan Service Scholars Site Supervisor Training 2008-2009

  2. Michigan Service ScholarsAmeriCorps Program • MSS program will provide $300,000 statewide to students attending any of the 42 member campuses. • Grant to distribute Education Award from the Michigan Community Service Commission and the Corporation for National Community Service.

  3. The MSS program • 300 students willing to complete 300 hrs of community service during one calendar year will be awarded a $1000 scholarship (Education Award). • 20% of those hours can be used for training (60 hours). Training is any volunteering that is not part of the program or workshops/conferences to improve a member’s skills. • 10% of those hours can be from fundraising hours (30 hours). Fundraising hours can only be for programmatic fundraising – not operations. • Only 300 spots and it is first come first serve; so enroll early!

  4. Areas of Member Service can include: • Community Based Research • Community Service • Federal Work Study • Special Projects • Student Positions on Campus • Student Organizations

  5. 2 General Areas of Service Volunteer Recruitment • Indirect service to recruit additional volunteers to participate in a service project, event, program, etc… • Hours served in this area may be done at any type of non-profit community organization or higher education institution. • Examples: You are serving for Habitat for Humanity or your campus community service/service-learning office to recruit student organizations to participate in service. Important Changes • Service done internationally is not acceptable • Students may not be paid at all for their service. • Academically-required service is not eligible (internships, mid-tiers, observation hrs.) Service Learning courses count. • Members can’t do the same work as staff. • Grad Students Are Eligible (not a change)

  7. Important ChangesPart 2 • Each student will be required to meet with the campus supervisor, either one-on-one or as a group prior to turning in their application • The supervisor must sign each application verifying they have met with the student and that they believe they will be able to serve all 300 hours. • MCC will provide points to cover at the meeting.
