  4. About Matthew Kelly Born on July 12, 1974, in Sydney, Australia, Single, Catholic, of Irish descent, international and inspirational speaker author of many books. Consultant of many Big companies A Modern Day Prophet

  5. Short introduction of The Catholic Church in Europe • 300 years of persecution • Edit of Milan gave Christians Freedom • When Emperors accepted the faith, • Roman Empire split into two. • After the Western part collapsed, the church filled the void. • Church and Barbarians • Church civilized Europe. • Christianity was Europe, vise versa. • Catholic Church became a way of life in Europe. • Excommunication was a tragedy

  6. Europe = Christianity • For more than 1000 years, Christianity is Europe, and Europe is Christianity. • Why and How? • Roman Empire split into two, Eastern and Western. Eastern was stronger of the two. When the Western Empire collapsed, there was no one to protect and guide the people except the Church.

  7. Church in Control • Barbarians invaded Europe and took over the land, but they did not know how to rule. Church men (clergy, clerics) administer the government for them. • Church established schools and took over the education, community service for the poor the sick and the powerless. • Church got into every aspect of life. • To belong to the Church was very important, Excommunication couldfinish one’s career and the future. If a king was excommunicated, he was finished because people did hnot have to obey him any more. • Peole usually did what the Church told them. • It’s not this way any more.

  8. Is Catholic Church still relavent? • Catholic Faith used to be ingrained in the culture and family tradition. • Less and less people follow the faith of their fathers. • Less and less people attend Mass over the weekend. • The ex-Catholics are the largest religious group after the Catholic Church in U.S. • Our Church is ill, sick in so many ways!

  9. Matthew Kelly’s Insights • How did the world in general and the Catholics in particular reach this point? • Matthew Kelly pointed out the society is not DUMB in knowledge, but NUMB in morality. prevailing philosophies are: 1. Individualism 2. Hedonism 3. Minimalism Plus misunderstanding on Vatican II.

  10. Individualism • Me-generation. Tend to be proud and selfish • Custom-made religion to suit myself. • Clever Distinction: I am not religious (Church-related) I am spiritual (God-related) (Something like the home-school). Education is important, but I don’t like the school system) Using existing religion as reference, I make my own rules and worship manner and schedule. This is my religion. I do it for myself, no sense of Evangelization, or to serve.

  11. Hedonism Hedonism basically means fun and pleasure. Most obvious case is Jet-Set, or hippie type life-stile. More subtle form is “Convenient and comfortable” The feel-good religion. Yield treasure to pleasure, Yield conviction to comfort

  12. Minimalism • I do want to get to heaven, but what is the minimum I must do and still get there. • How much of the Mass I can miss and still can be counted as present. • Disengaged members (similar to the paralyzed part of the body

  13. Inspiring Saying and Ideas • Matthew Kelly has a sharp mind to have great insight and a talent to create catchy expressions • If you are not part of the solution, hen you are part of the problem. • Future bigger than the past. • Without vision, people perish • Best Version of Self • Strive for Excellence • Church must change, and begins with me. Ask not the Church to change for me, Ask that I change for the Church. • Don’t tell me, show me. • Called to holiness, inherent with a mission of evangeliation, • Why people don’t come to Church? Reverse the question, Why doesn’t Church go to people?
