  4. M-ADS BACKGROUND • 1990: Helicopter Safety Study • by research company SINTEF • Conclusion: Safety improvement in theNorth Sea • helicopter operations was required. • NCAA decision: To use ADS as recommended by ICAO • for surveillance outside radar coverage.

  6. M-ADS BACKGROUND • 1991: NCAA launched the M-ADS-project • in co-operation with: • - 7 oil companies, • - Helikopter Service AS • - Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. • - Telenor Satellite

  7. M-ADS BACKGROUND • The ADS-Contract-system (ADS-C) was chosen for the surveillance, and based on ICAO’s ADS-concept: • - technical specifications in RTCA DO-212 • - the recommended ATN • - data-linking via INMARSAT

  8. M-ADS BACKGROUND 1991: Phase I - Testing the long communication-chain of dataflow via datalink. 1994: Phase II - Reorganisation of the project. Further testing of datalink. 1996: Report from ”ATM & Procedures task force”. Operational testing with 2 M-ADS equipped helicopters.

  9. M-ADS BACKGROUND • 1996: The M-ADS project divided in: • Operational Concept-group - producing • ”M-ADS operational criteria and procedures”. • HMI-groupproducing HMI-specifications for • the ”Radar and ADS Display System” (RaADS).

M-ADS OPERATIONAL • 1999: January1st - M-ADS mandatory for all helicopters • operating on the Norwegian Shelf. • April 22nd - operational testing at Stavanger ATCC. • October 1st - M-ADS installed in 38 helicopters. • 2000: January 1st - M-ADS operational at Stavanger, • Trondheim and Bodø ATCC

  11. M-ADS OPERATIONAL Purpose To improve safety by improved ATS with surveillance of all offshore helicopter operations on the Norwegian Shelf. The result: - Improved Alerting Service - Improved Flight Information Service

  12. M-ADS OPERATIONAL • Improved Alerting Service RaADS provides automatic functioning alarms • (by blinking, colour, sound, position, time) when: • - update of a radar-track has failed • - update of an ADS-track has failed • - abnormal descend occurs • - the pilot initiates emergency signals

  13. M-ADS OPERATIONAL Alerting Signals • - Transponder code 7500/7600/7700 • - Activated alarm-button on the M-ADS equipment • - Emergency descend (2000 FT/min.+) • - ”Coasting” of a radar-track • - ”Timetag” when no update of an ADS-track

  14. M-ADS OPERATIONAL • Improved Flight Information Service • RaADS will display all radar- and ADS-tracks to ATS • integrated at one display. The improvements for ATS: • - Able to give exact traffic information • - Collect information from helicopter FMS (via ADS) • - Maintain continuous surveillance ( = dct. routing ) • - No oral position reports => • less R/T load + improved ATS alertness

  15. M-ADS OPERATIONAL • Information Groups: • Basic:Latitude/Longitude Altitude Time when message was sent • Accuracy (Figure Of Merit) • SSR: SSR code + on/standby indication • Weight-on-wheels + valid indication

  22. M-ADS OPERATIONAL • The purpose • - Provide ADS and radar based Alerting Service and FIS • to M-ADS equipped aircraft • - Reduce flight time by direct routes • - Published request to all other traffic to avoid ADS-areas • or to establish contact with the ATC before entering

  24. M-ADS THE FUTURE • Development • - datalink via VHF for • Air Traffic Control Service • - combined ADS-C and ADS-B • (with CDTI and CPDLC) • CDTI = COCKPIT DISPLAY OF TRAFFIC INFORMATION CPDLC = CONTROLLER PILOT DATA LINK COMMUNICATION
