What is an Insect? An insect is an arthropod An arthropod is an animal that does not have a back bone! Instead of having bones inside, there bones are on the outside There bodies are hard on the outside, it would be like wearing knight armor There hard bodies are called Exoskeletons
What makes it an insect? • An insect has 6 legs • Insects have 2 antennae (that is how they smell) • Insects have 2 eyes • Insects breathe from tiny wholes along their bodies, these are called spiracles • Some insects have wings • Insects have three separate body parts a head, a thorax, and an abdomen

Insects There are approximately 5,000 dragonfly species, 2,000 praying mantis, 20,000 grasshopper, 170,000 butterfly and moth, 120,000 fly, 82,000 true bug, 350,000 beetle, and 110,000 bee and ant species that have been discovered to this date, for a total of more than 925,000 species. It is estimated that there could be as many as 15-30 million species of insects that have yet to be discovered by science.
