When did Rome exist? 27B.C.E. – 476C.E.
Rome as a Republic • Early on, Rome was a republic • This means that citizens were represented by other people in the government. • This is representative democracy.
Rome as a Republic • Rome was divided into two groups: • Patricians (the rich) • Plebeians (the poor)
Rome as a Republic • Patricians were the only ones allowed to serve in the government.
Rome as a Republic • The plebeians got upset that they had no voice in the government. • They went on strike and refused to do anything. • Finally, they were allowed to start tribunes to make their voice heard. • They could even reject what the rest of the government wanted to do.
Checks and Balances • The Romans invented checks and balances. • This is where one part of the government can limit what other parts can do. • Nobody gets too powerful.
Checks and Balances • Each part of the government could veto, or reject what the other wants.
Democracy to a Dictator • Rome became a dictatorship when Julius Caesar took over in 49 BC. • Caesar started a long period of peace called the PaxRomana • During this time, Rome expanded and became richer. • He was the first Roman emperor…after him, there was no more democracy in Rome.
Election Project • Today, you and a partner will begin planning for the JMMS Fall 2014 Student Council election. • Use your notes. Why should you care that people want to vote for you? • Come up with a slogan and logo. This should happen very quickly. Your slogan should describe how you want to help James Martin MS in no more than 5 words. • Decide on three “talking points.” Talking points are things that you will do if you are elected. They should be things that you can tell people quickly, and are easy to understand. • Finally, why should people vote for you? Write something different from your “talking points.” What about you would make a good representative of James Martin Middle?
