Purpose of a Resume • GET THE INTERVIEW! • Marketing yourself • What makes you unique • Answer the question “Why should the employer want to talk to you?” • Customize, Customize, Customize • Only give enough information that 100% qualifies you for the job and “NO MORE, NO LESS.”
Overview • Does the resume “Paint a Clear Picture?” • Does the resume “Tell your Story?” • Does the resume let the employer make a quick assessment to go further with an interview? • Is it a good advertisement?
Overall appearance • White Space, enough? Too Much? • Is it pleasing to the eye? • Is it Balanced? • Name/address/phone and e-mail take up minimum amount space? • No more then two pages! (name and phone on each page.
Clear objective • Concise • Easy to understand • Is objective “EXACTLY” for what position the applicant is applying?
Hot Zone • 15 Second rule (sell yourself in the first half page of resume) • Accomplishments • Summary of Qualifications • Areas of Expertise • Accomplishments Statements • Rs of PSRs (Problem, Solution, Result) • Action verbs
Work History • Top Left Rule • What is most important to employer place top of paragraph, and left in first line. • Make sure dates are clear. MM/YYYY • Only list 10 years of history • If job description says 6 years of experience, then put 6 plus years in experience.
Technical skills • Easy to read • Only put skills that are in the job description • Don’t date yourself with old technology
Education • List highest degree first • Don’t put dates on education • Only list training that relate to job being applying for.
