  2. Nouns A person, place, thing, or idea Examples: • desk • Lindblom • puppy • democracy

  3. Pronouns A word that takes the place of a noun Examples: • she • them • ours • it

  4. Verbs An action or state of being Examples: • jog • been • write • kill

  5. Adjectives Modify nouns Examples: • Crafty (The crafty dog escaped again!) • content • excellent • ambitious

  6. Adverbs Modify adjectives, verbs, and other adverbs Examples: • feebly • fearlessly • soon • rapidly

  7. Conjunctions A word that connects other words, clauses, phrases, or sentences. Examples: FANBOYS: For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so Other conjunction examples: because, moreover, therefore, however

  8. Prepositions Used before a noun or pronoun to express a relation to another word or phrase in the sentence. Examples: • under • around • within • after The blanket was on the couch.

  9. Interjections An exclamatory expression of emotion. Examples: • Geez! • Ughhh! • Hooray! • Wow!
