  2. What do you think is going on in this picture? (finish at least two of these sentence starters) I see… I wonder… It looks like… It reminds me of… Lascaux, France Cave Paintings 25,000-12,000 B.C.
  3. Cornell Notes Name: Ms. Ayers Class: World History Date: August 28 Topic/Objective: Archaeology Essential Question: What is archaeology and how can it teach us about the past? Questions: Notes: Summary:
  4. Archaeology

Archaeologists look for all kinds of artifacts: Tools Pottery Paintings Weapons Buildings Household items THE STUDY OF PAST SOCIETIES THROUGH AN ANALYSIS OF WHAT PEOPLE HAVE LEFT BEHIND.
  5. ANTHROPOLOGY THE STUDY OF HUMAN LIFE AND CULTURE. ANTHROPOLOGISTS USE ARTIFACTS AND HUMAN FOSSILS (REMAINS) TO DETERMINE HOW PEOPLE LIVED THEIR LIVES.
  6. Let’s examine our own culture! Each group will be getting a picture of an item from our own society Come up with what archaeologists or historians could deduce (find out) about our culture just be finding this artifact You will be sharing with the class so try and come up with at least 1 solid answer
  7. We do not always know the whole story of the past because we NEVER have all the pieces – the facts. This makes history interesting. There are always more pieces - more history- to find.
  8. So what is history? What is your definition of history? What is the difference between history and trivia? (Yes, there is a difference!)
  9. “History” makes a difference . “Trivia” doesn’t. Who are the professionals that study history? “History” Refers to the people, places, things and events from the past that made a meaningful impact on the future.
  10. HistoriansWhat do they do?(Take notes from the kid with the answer) Study the written records (primary sources) of the past to write about history.
  11. What doGeographersdo?

Study the physical processes of the earth and the human interaction with the environment
  12. Archaeologists(Discuss and fill in your notes)

Dig in the ground to find, label, analyze and categorize artifacts.
  13. Anthropologists

Have a broad view of human culture, linking human institutions, cultural traits and institutions across time and place.
  14. What role would you take?
  15. Each of these History professional uses particular research tools to Study the Past Population Pyramids Artifacts Maps Primary Sources Fables and Legends Trowels Grid Patterns Climate graph Secondary Sources Family patterns Change over time Labels Bibliographies Oral History Video Cultural Traits Regions Tattoos Economic Systems Bones Religious traditions Shovels Radiocarbon Dating Sociology Google Earth Timelines Languages Eating Habits Needs and Wants Research Natural Resources in an Area Museums Political Systems Tables and charts Erosion GPS / GIS Religious Holidays and Celebrations Library Tape Measure Internet searches
  16. Historian Geographer All As a group, fill in the last worksheet and try and get each profession with the right research tools. Archeologist Anthropologist
  17. Chocolate Chip Cookie Excavation Each of you will come up and get a chocolate chip cookie DO NOT EAT IT! You will also get a toothpick and napkin Place your cookie on the napkins and carefully use the toothpick to excavate or pick out the chocolate chips. While doing this try not to disturb the dough portion of the cookie This same process on a larger scale is what archaeologists and anthropologists are doing in the field. They dig up artifacts while trying not to disturb the area too much. They do this so we can learn about cultures of the past and one day archaeologists and anthropologists might study us in the same way!
  18. To sum it up! Summarize two important ideas you have learned today. Is history/archaeology a perfect science? (Quick write is your exit ticket out of class)
