  2. Criteria for Selection • Appropriate use of language • Focus on people living with HIV • Relevance to Nigerian situation • Balance • Accuracy • Evidence of research • Investigative depth • Diversity of focus

Judges Observations -1 • 25categories advertised, but winners selected in only 18 categories • Some categories did not produce winners because of low number of entries or lack of competition • Some entries were submitted under wrong categories or classifications • Some particular categories had very high numbers of entries

  4. Judges Observations - 2 • Balanced reporting was missing in a number of entries • Use of unattributed statistics which reduces credibility and authenticity • Many reports include a commendable focus on people living with HIV • Increasing trend towards positivism in media reporting of HIV/AIDS

  5. Judges Observations - 3 • Generally, the print entries were informative and geared towards behaviour change • Broadcast entries showed relevance and vibrancy in focus of story angles • However, majority of broadcast entries were of poor audio quality and had unnecessarily long introductions

Judges Observations - 4 • Media must change reporting focus from a scenario of fear to hope • Media is a powerful organ for creating and changing perception • Media reporting must continue to focus on including perspectives of people living with HIV • Corporate media must be in the vanguard to roll back HIV/AIDS

  7. Judges Observations - 5 • Winners should see the awards as a challenge for sustaining positive and illuminating reportage • To all entrants, including those whose categories could not produce winners, keep up your good work and try again next year!
