Light Activities KS1 • Starter Activities (Year 1 and 2) • L1 – To identify and describe different light sources • L2 - To compare different light sources and the light sources they produce • Dice with light sources or not on them • ‘Talk Ball’ with true or false or light facts on it • Blindfold light source – safety • Timed light source search – feedback to class and discuss Education & Cultural Services Department

Light Activities KS1 • Measuring Brightness of Light (Year 2) • L2 - Measure how bright a light source is using a light sensor and explain that the readings are higher because the light source is brighter • L3 - if can use sensor independently • teacher could demo or do in small groups • -Use sensors – ICT links essential • - Compare brightness of candles – 1/2/3, sizes, thickness –safety points • Compare brightness of light bulbs with a lamp – 40W, 60W, 100W – safety points Education & Cultural Services Department

Light Activities KS1 Reflection (Year 1 or 2) L1 – Describe materials L2 - Sort, comparing similarities and differences L3 -Explain that properties of some materials make them reflective - Make a den. Give the children a torch and some reflective or non-reflective materials. They sort the materials in the den. Scientific language discussed as a class/group. - Take some light/non light sources into the den.Sort – make sure one is a mirror so can discuss reflectors and relate to moon Education & Cultural Services Department

Light Activities KS1 • Real-Life Examples • Look at the part science has played in the development of many useful things • L1 - Describe materials • L2 - Sort, compare similarities and differences • Make sure that real-life examples are used throughout science. With reflection, possible resources to collect and demonstrate with are: • bike reflectors - reflective clothing • various mirrors Education & Cultural Services Department
