Read silently and annotate… • Note: • Main ideas • Specific examples • Particular language that evokes an emotion in you • Anything else that stands out to you as important
Reflection • Reflect on the article after your first reading. What is your gut reaction? Also, note any questions you may have about the article – was anything unanswered, or does something need clarification? Then, identify the thesis of the article. Highlight/underline it, and highlight/underline at least 3 examples in the article that support the thesis.
Second Reading Read aloud, and answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper…
Introduction • How does Herbert show you that racial profiling is significant? Look for specific examples in the text.
The Faces of Ethnic Profiling • Why does the author tell you the story of Rossano Gerald? How does he use it to illustrate the larger point of the essay?
Profiling Targets the Innocent • Why does Herbert give these facts about pedestrians in New York? What is the main point of this particular section?
Profiling is Extensive • What does Herbert assert are the consequences of racial profiling? What do YOU think the consequences of racial profiling are?
Reading Against the Grain • Do you trust Herbert? Why or why not? Do you think Herbert has an agenda? Do you find any flaws in his arguments, and if so, what are they? Does Herbert have any biases? If he does, how do they play into his argument?
