Mrs. Schnake, PE Teacher • Married (6 years), daughter Faith (1.5 years) • Teaching for 5 years • Coach MS Volleyball (2 years), HS Basketball (5 years), and Track/Field (5 years) • Favorite sports – basketball, volleyball, rock climbing • Favorite book– All Dr. Seuss, Harry Potter Series, Hunger Games Series • Favorite pastime – beach, gardening, knitting, hiking, swimming • Favorite foods – pizza, cheese, ice cream, fruits • Professional goal – inspire students’ love for physical movement and wellness • Personal goal – never stop learning and affecting positive changes in others

  3. Fire Emergency • Silence! Order! • Put equipment down. • Walk to emergency door. • Walk to safety in single line. • Listen for directions.

  4. Tornado Emergency • Silence! Order! • Put equipment down. • Walk to inside wall • Duck and cover • Listen for directions.

  5. Lock Down • Put equipment down • Walk to area designated by teacher • Silence

  6. When will I be successful? I will be successful only if I can develop self- responsibility for my own behavior and learning.

  7. Action Levels • Unacceptable or Cannot  • Not helping anyone, including self. Arguing. • Not following directions or paying attention • Harming Equipment or Others. Being Out of control. • Not participating and/or being a poor sport. Poor attitude

School Rules and Procedures • Rules • Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself. • Obey directions the first time given by all staff members. • Speak appropriately to others • No gum or hats are allowed. • Procedures • Follow the rules for all school areas. • Walk without talking in a single line on the right side of the hall. • All students must use designated hall passes

  11. PE Rules • Enter and leave quietly. • Raise hand for permission to speak. • Follow directions. • Respect others. • Ask for permission to leave class area. • Take good care of athletic equipment. 

  12. Rewards • Self-satisfaction of doing right thing • Teacher oral recognition • Reward stickers and slips • Letter sent home • Fun Day

  13. Fun Day Class can be rewarded with a fun day, which is a choice of activities, for consistently good behavior, sports-person-ship, and group cooperation.

  14. Consequences • Warning for younger students • Time out in the gym with an option to return to class • Time out without an option to return to class • Time out in different area • Referral, contacting parents • Behavior contract

  15. Attire • Sneakers, tennis shoes, athletic shoes • No sandals, flip fl0ps, dress shoes, high heels, boots, platform shoes of any kind. • Shorts, comfortable pants worn on waist • T-shirts, sweatshirts • Athletic clothing Reasons: healthy growth, safety, comfort, cool look

  18. Warm-up Routine • Maximum 10 minutes • Alternating intensity of basic movement. • Basic conditioning • Stretch

  19. PE Partner • Randomly drawn, assigned by teacher, chosen • Approach another student. • Ask: “Would you like to be my partner today?” • Answer: “Yes, thank you” or “Thank you for asking, but I am already “Susie’s” partner today.” • Sit down together.

  20. Teams • Selected by teacher: • Randomly, • According to skill level

  21. When Someone Bothers me. • Ignore him/her. • Tell him/ her to stop. • Tell PE teacher when 1. and 2. are not working. • Tell your classroom teacher. • Tell your parents at home.

  22. To Solve Disagreements • Talk it Over Seat on steps • Discuss, negotiate, ask for teacher’s help if can’t create a solution to the problem, take turns, use game solutions: • Paper, Rock, Scissors

  23. Homework • Fitness Calendar • Exercise every day 30-60 minutes. • Try to involve as many members of your family as possible. • Do not skip homework even on weekends.

  24. Bathroom • Use the bathroom before or after the class. • In case of emergency: • Ask the teacher for permission. • Only one person at a time. • Return as soon as possible. • Check in with teacher.

  25. Water • During the class: May get a drink during activity time. If the teacher is talking or another student is talking, then need to wait until finished. • After the class: • Only one person at the water fountain. • After finishing, line up in designated spot on the side of the hall.

  26. Injuries • Pain is a human’s natural protecting mechanism. • After minor incident, pain lasts only a few minutes. • Inform teacher, if injury pain is severe and persists long time. • Report every case of bleeding.

  27. Illness • Participation in PE is mandated by law. • Only doctor can excuse a student from long term participation. • Parent can write an excuse from class in case of common illnesses such as: flu, diarrhea, etc. • In case of sudden illness, student can receive excuse for classroom or PE teacher.

  28. Class PE Manager • Responsible, sharp, helpful • Job description: • Report absentees • Help to set up equipment • Help clean up equipment or gym (everyone helps)

  29. Report Cards • Each trimester • For attendance, effort, behavior

  30. What is PE • One of the components of education • Has own tools and methods. • Prepares for success in the future. • Equips students with information about health and fitness. • Teaches sport and games. • Provides opportunity to improve skills. • Gives suggestion and teaches skills for lifelong sport and recreation activities. • Gives opportunity for appropriate social interaction, cooperation, competition, etc.

Emphasis by trimester (subject to change: • 1st trimester - Cooperation, fitness, sports, health • 2nd trimester - gymnastics, dance, health • 3rd trimester - track and field, sports, health During each class we will work on sport, fitness, and social skills.
