Reason For children in the factor • During the 1800s Century, the use of power machines led to an extremely growth in factories • Small fingers • Cheaper, stay competitive • Fit in small areas • Age 3-14

Working conditions • Poorly lit • Overcrowded • Harsh conditions • 10 to 14 hours a day “normal” • No break • Injuries and death • Lost fingers, arms and legs • Mind Lost • Disease, illness, and chronical conditions • Always tired “fell in machines”
Jobs • Coal mines “trappers” • Coal bearers “Age 25” • Cotton mills “orphans” • Chimney Sweepers • Rat Catchers • Farm Work • By 1910, almost 2 million children employed
School for children • Since long hours at work, no time for school • Families didn’t allowed them • Family worried about money • Not education
Laws • In 1819, they passed an act stating that children under the age 9 couldn't work in factories • In 1833, another act passed, children between the age 9–13 weren’t able to work more than 12 hours per day, 48 per week. • In 1842, Miners Act banned women and children under 10 working underground in mines • In 1870, The Parliament stated there are to be schools in every town • By 1880, the law stated all children ae 5 to 10 must go to primary school

Mother Jones • In 1903, marched Philadelphia to New York demanding to stop child labor
