Building on last week ... • God is in control • We are called to faithfulness, endurance and caution • Why is Jesus telling us this? • Whole chapter hinges on the first few verses: • Jesus predicts the temple will be utterly destroyed (v 2). • Disciples ask “When?” (v 4) • Need to understand the Language & the Imagery

  3. 1. Understanding the Language First: “Abomination that causes desolation” (v 14) • Occurs 3x in Daniel (9:27, 11:31, 12:11) • In 167 BC Antiochus IV sacrificed pigs to Zeus on altar. • Had to be when fleeing was still possible (before AD 70) • Once temple was destroyed – this could not happen.

  4. 1. Understanding the Language . . . Second: Words – “angels” (v 27); “elect” (v 20, 22, 27) • ANGELS (v 27) • “angelos” means “messenger”, not always heavenly. • Luke 7:24 (John’s messengers); Mark 1:2 (John the Baptist) • Translators have to make a choice • v 27 could read: “he will send his messengers [missionaries]” • Links in with v 10 “Gospel preached to all nations ...”

Understanding the Language . . . • ELECT (v 20, 22, 27) • “eklektos” means “chosen” • Since Reformation (1500’s), mysterious and ominous feel • Scary exclusion of people from salvation • Jesus – simply refers to all who respond to the Gospel • Those who by God’s grace embrace salvation with joy. • “Elect” is the “church”, the “people of God”. • “being gathered” = expansion of the church to all nations • Gathered not to a place, to a person (Jesus).

Understanding the Imagery Interpreting imagery of vv 24-27 • Important OT allusions: • Negative side: darkening of sun and moon, etc (v 24-25) • Positive side: Jesus coming in power & glory (v 26-27) Negative: Darkening of the sun, etc • These verses come from Isaiah (similar to other prophets)

  7. 2. Understanding the Imagery . . . The right headspace . . . “As the Arab Spring progresses, whirlwinds continue to wreak havoc across the Middle East. From Tunisia to Cairo, Libya to Damascus the world is being turned upside down. In some places the sea of oil is becoming a sea of blood. ...” • Questions: • Is there an actual whirlwind in the Middle East? • Is there a Sea of Oil somewhere near the Mediterranean? • Has tectonic movement of earth’s crust flipped cities over?

  8. 2. Understanding the Imagery . . . • What am I talking about? • Political turmoil, economic instability ... • You all know what I am talking about. • Without thinking you interpret symbolic imagery correctly • It is normal and common to use symbolic language

  9. 2. Understanding the Imagery . . . Looking at Jesus’ words more carefully: • Isaiah 13 is “a prophecy concerning Babylon” (v 1) • Isaiah 13:10 (= Mark 13:24b) • God will raise up the Medes (Persians) to punish them (v 17) • Language of “sun darkened”, etc refers to the turmoil & upheaval. • It is NOT literal. • Isaiah 34 is a prophecy against Edom: • Isaiah 34:4 (= Mark 13:25) • Destruction, turmoil, judgment from God. • Figurative language to express a political and economic reality.

  10. 2. Understanding the Imagery . . . Positive: Son of Man coming in glory: • From Daniel 7:13-14 • Where is this happening? • In the Throne room of HEAVEN ! ! ! ! • The slain lamb sits on the throne (Rev 5:6, etc)

  11. 3. Understanding the Whole • Jesus answers the question – “when”? (v 2-4) • False messiahs will come – do not be deceived (v 5-6) • Wars, earthquakes, famines – do not be alarmed (v 7-8) • Just the beginning of birth pains (v 8) • You will be persecuted, betrayed – be my witnesses (v 9-10) • See “abomination of desolation” – Flee (v 14-19) • More false messiahs, signs, ... – do not believe (v 20-23) • Political / religious disaster – temple is destroyed (v 24-25) • Replaced by Son in Glory – Messengers call all chosen (v 26-27)

Judaism without a Temple ... • Sacrifices: especially annual“Sacrifice of Atonement” • Rabbis went back to the Old Testament: • Found – 1 Sam 15:22, Psalm 51:17, Hosea 6:6, etc • Reasoned God was interested in our hearts • Sacrifices less important than faith, reliance on him, etc • Obey whatever was possible of the Law, trust God. • Paul uses this reasoning – but • One final “sacrifice of Atonement” has been made – Jesus.
