Hallucinogens • Hallucinogenic found in some plants and mushrooms have been used—mostly during religious rituals—for centuries. • Psychoactive drugs that dramatically alter consciousness and produce hallucinations • EX: Marijuana, LSD, mushrooms, Scopolamine, ayhuasca, ketamine, PCP, mescaline

  4. Effects on the brain • Many hallucinogens contain chemical compounds that are structurally similar to serotonin or acetylcholine, which disrupts normal functioning of the neurotransmitter system. • A dissociative hallucinogen is a drug, which reduces (or blocks) signals to the conscious mind from other parts of the brain.
