Warm Up • Take out review packet and APES math review. • Check your math answers against the key and continue by working on page 3. • Answer to #19: 50 Mg • Get a laptop if you do not have an iPad
List three (specific) consequences of global warming. • 1) Causes ocean acidification. • Increased atmospheric CO2 levels lead to an increase in oceanic CO2 levels. • CO2 + H2O H2CO3 H+ + HCO3- • 2) Sea levels rise • Melting of land-based glaciers • 3) Melting/defrosting of permafrost • Released additional amounts of CH4 and CO2 • Positive feedback loop
List three specific actions you could do to decrease your contribution to global warming. • 1) Buy energy efficient products/turning off appliances when not in use • Energy=electricity=fossil combustion=increased GHG emissions • 2) Plant trees • Increased levels of photosynthesis= increased carbon sequestration (to remove and store) • 3) Drive less frequently • Driving=gas usage=fossil fuel combustion=increased CO2 emissions
Temperature vs. Altitude • Know the relationship between altitude and temperature! • In the troposphere: as alt. increases, temp decreases.
Biodiversity • The number of species of plants, animals, and microorganisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth.
Agriculture • Agriculture involving domestication of plants and animals was developed around 10,000 B.C.
Biome • a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat, e.g., forest or tundra.
Describe the circumstances that will result in cultural eutrophication. • Agricultural runoff (containing nitrates) enter a local body of water and cause an excess growth of algae. Excess algae decreased amount of dissolved O2
Explain how increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere leads to ocean acidification. • Increased levels of atmospheric CO2 diffuse into the ocean. • CO2 then combines with H2O to form carbonic acid (H2CO3).
