Heroes. By: Robert Cormier. Francis Cassavant. In the story Francis Cassavant is a World War 2 veteran. He was born in Frenchtown and lived there until he joined the war when he was 15. He is a hero among all his fellow soldiers after jumping on a grenade in France saving all their lives.

Francis Cassavant • In the story Francis Cassavant is a World War 2 veteran. • He was born in Frenchtown and lived there until he joined the war when he was 15. • He is a hero among all his fellow soldiers after jumping on a grenade in France saving all their lives. • He was wounded very badly having his face almost totally destroyed and is still in a bad condition. • For jumping on the grenade he was awarded the famed silver star medal, but Francis does not feel like a hero as he did not intentionally jump on the grenade just to save his fellow soldiers.
Francis’ youth • When Francis was young the Recreation Center in Frenchtown was rebuilt when Larry LaSalle took over management. • He was a hero to all the kids teaching them many sports and fun things to do after school. • Larry taught Francis how to play table tennis and to be very good at it as he could not play any other sport very good.
Larry LaSalle • Larry LaSalle is a World War 2 veteran as well. • He was the manager of the recreation center close to where Francis lived as a boy. • Was Francis and Nicole’s childhood hero until one day when he hurt Nicole. • He also won a silver star in the war for bravery.
Nicole Renard • Nicole was Francis Cassavant’s childhood girlfriend. • She was hurt by Larry LaSalle when she was just a child. • She is the same age as Francis at 15 years old. • Larry was also Nicole’s hero at a young age when he was her dance instructor.
Revenge • Francis wants Revenge on Larry LaSalle for hurting Nicole when they were just children. • Francis is waiting for Larry to return to Frenchtown to get revenge by killing Larry. • Francis eventually finds Larry when he returns to Frenchtown and heads to kill him. • Larry seeing Francis and learning of Francis’ knowledge of him raping Nicole Renard does not let Francis kill him. • He kills himself knowing what he has done is evil and tries to repay his debt to life by ending his own life.
Ending • Francis eventually finds Nicole living in another town after talking with a nun at the Frenchtown church. • Nicole telling Francis that them getting together would never work and wishes Francis a good farewell with a kiss.
