  1. UNDERSTANDING SEXUAL RIGHTS OF YOUTH, GENDER BASED VIOLENCE IN THE FACE OF POVERTY FALANA, MARTIN-MARY Executive Director Kids & Teens Resource Centre 8, Akoko Avenue, Opposite Solton Hotels, Ijapo Estate, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. (+234)-8035606915,

  2. Introduction • From the drama: • Powerlessness • Economically disadvantaged characters • Poor Parent-to-Child Communication • Lack of Access to adequate Care Services • Poor road network

  3. POVERTY • Not one’s inability to eat three square meals in a day • Poverty as a denial right to basic ammenities and social infrastructures • Lack of potable water, good road, adequate health care, electricity, employment, information etc.

  4. POVERTY contd. • Poverty is massive in Nigeria compared to other countries both in and outside Africa • Poverty in Nigeria is not only widespread but it is also deep and severe • Nigeria will be unable to meet the agreed MDGs at current pace

  5. Resource Distribution • How many NGOs are working in the rural and marginalized communities? • How many government programmes are targetting young people in the rural areas? • How many youths are in the capital cities with relation to the numbers in the rural areas of our country?

  6. RURAL, MARGINALIZED & EXCLUDED COMMUNITIES • In communities where young people’s votes are recognized, they are denied of their basic rights • Should all young people in the rural, marginalized and excluded communities be dying daily because of lack of access to adequate Health Care services? • Poor road network makes the issues worrisome for young people to access treatment and care

  7. Youth & the Future • The future may be bleak if no actions are taken today • Many young people are dying from avoidable deaths • Losing a lot of potential leaders of tomorrow to AIDS, Abortion & Ignorance

  8. Devastating Impact • Lack of Education- Female Genital Cuttings among our people, denying us from our rights to sexual satisfaction • Poverty in the family- could not support us in school, leading young people to “making use of what they have” • Girls drop-out of School because of unwanted pregnancy while the boys continue thereby increasing poverty

  9. CONSOLATION • Young people’s energy, idealism and commitment can be channelled to make the world a better place for me and for you. • We are the force for change. • Give it to us - our rights.

  10. RECOMMENDATIONS • Government and stakeholders should put in place policies that will embrace “youth-friendly services” • More awareness should be created on Adolescent Reproductive Health & Sexual Rights.

  11. FEEDBACKS • Young people accessing Internet??? • How many development partners and government are working to make power supply available in the excluded communities? • How many are doing programmes that will make an average youth in the rural area computer compliance? • How many of them can then access information on internet?

  12. FEEDBACKS • Leadership Questioned!!! • Nigeria has a policy on Examination Malpractices which ends young people caught in Jail of 21years • Our leaders are involved in Election malpractices and no penalty. • Inequality to justice • We are watching them!
