1843-48 THE GREAT MIGRATION • When a thousand settlers set out for Oregon by wagon train, it was called-like other westward movements before it-the Great Migration. Five years later a carpenter working at a California sawmill found gold flakes in a stream, triggering a stampede that would make the ’43 characterization seem almost laughable.
The first Americans to reach the Oregon country were not farmers but fur traders. They had came to trap beaver, whose skin were in great demand in the eastern United States and In Europe. Mountain Men
In 1833 General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became president of Mexico. Stephen F. Austin traveled to Mexico City with demands and Santa Anna only agreed to the first one which was to remove the ban on American settlers. Attempt at Reconciliation
Cause and Effect of Westward Movement CAUSES Americans accept Manifest Destiny. As the East becomes more crowded, Americans want more land. The West contains furs, lumber, and precious metals. EFFECTS Native Americans are forced off their lands. The United States wars with Mexico. The U.S. extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
