Rule 1: Add ’s to form the possessive of a singular noun. cat (singular noun) cat’s dish (singular possessive - the dish is owned by the cat)
Examples: • The cat’s dish was empty • Mike’s bike is in the garage. • The teacher’s pet is named Hobbes.
Rule 2: Add ’ to form the possessive of a plural noun that ends in s. • cats (plural noun) • cats’ tails (plural possessive - the tails belong to the cats)
Examples: • The cats’ tails were huge. • The boys’ soccer balls were on the lawn. • The neighbors’ houses all lost power during the storm.
Rule 3: Add ’s to form the possessive of a plural noun that does not end in s. • children (plural noun which does not end in s) • children’s books (plural possessive – the books belong to the children)
Examples: • The children’s books were on the table. • The mice’s cages needed cleaning.
Rule 4: Add ’s to form the possessive of NOUNS WHICH ARE THE SAME IN SINGULAR AND PLURAL: Treat them the same as plurals, even if the meaning is singular • moose (singular or plural noun) • moose’s antlers
Examples: • The lone moose’s antlers were huge. (singular) • The two deer’s tracks led into the garage. (plural)
