  1. Chapter Twenty-Eight Monday, March 5, 2012

  2. Key for the various convicts • OC (original convict) – “Wittles” “Heart and Liver guy” • Man from the Three Jolly Bargemen (TJB). Pip recognizes this man on the stagecoach on his way back to his hometown. • The man to whom TJB is speaking on the stagecoach.

  3. Pip’s Discovery on the Stage Coach. • Pp. 123 “In considering the question whether I ought to restore a couple of pounds sterling to this creature before losing sight of him.” • Why does Pip feel the need to return money to this man? • Pip recognizes one of the convicts as the same man who gave him the one pound notes at the Three Jolly Bargemen (TJB).

  4. Pip’s discovery on the Stage Coach • He overhears TJB tell the other convict that he (TJB) had met (OC) in prison. OC knew that TJB was going to be released and asked him to give Pip those notes for feeding him and keeping him safe.

  5. Chapter 29 : Estella • Pip tries to remind Estella of all the times that she went out of her way to be mean to Pip. He realizes that she has no memories of this. Ex. (126) “I verily believe that her not remembering and not minding in the least, made me cry again, inwardly—and that is the sharpest crying of all.” • Estella admits that she has no heart. Because she has no heart, her memories are very limited.

  6. Pip’s Reaction • (127) “I got through some jargon to the effect that I took the liberty of doubting. That I knew better. That there could be no such beauty without it.” • What does Pip associate with “beauty”?

  7. Miss Havisham’s definition of love. • (127) I’ll tell you…what real love is. It is blind devotion, unquestioning self-humiliation, utter submission, trust and belief against yourself and against the whole world, giving up your whole heart and soul to the smiter—as I did!” • “Love her, love her, love her.”
