The SOE has five departments and two research centers Departments • Department of Counseling and Human Services • Department of Interdisciplinary Studies • Department of Special Education • Department of Teacher Preparation • Department of Teacher Development and Leadership  Research Centers • Center for Technology in Education • Center for Research Reform in Education

  11. Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy is the Chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services. The department has five faculty members, 3 staff members, and 15 active faculty associates.

Faculty Accomplishments • Active researchers and scholars of counseling • Publication of research in prominent counseling journals • Books published and book contracts secured • Highly sought after for consultation and workshop presentations (regionally, nationally, and internationally) • Regular presentations at major counseling conferences • Highly cited in refereed counseling journals • Actively involved in regional, national, and international counseling organizations • Prominent elected board positions in regional and national counseling organizations • Demonstrated teaching excellence

  13. Department Mission:Prepare highly qualified professionals who provide leadership in the development of personal, organizational and collective well-being in the fields of clinical community counseling, and school counseling.

  14. The Department offers two degree concentrations: • School Counseling • Clinical Community Counseling

  15. The department also offers certificates of advanced graduate study and graduate certificate programs.

  17. Student and Alumni Counseling Association (SACA) The Student Counseling Association is one of the most active student groups on campus with more than 125 members.

  18. Re-Activation of Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society Chapter (Lambda Chapter) • 50 + members inducted during Spring 2010 • Faculty advisor: Dr. Anita Young “Promoting Excellence in the Profession of Counseling”

  19. For 24 years the department has offered a nationally acclaimed Summer Seminars program which attracts counselors, psychologists, social workers, and other human service practitioners nationwide and is taught by leading authorities in the field.

  20. 2010 Departmental Accomplishments • Completion of CACREP self-study for school counseling program • Application deadlines for fall and spring semesters • Group admission interviews initiated and conducted • Re-activated chapter of Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society

  21. 2010 Departmental Accomplishments • Full-time cohort of school counseling students (school reform, urban emphasis) • Increased on-line course offerings • Appraisal and Testing • Ethics for Clinical Counselors • Research and Evaluation for Counselor • Approval of 60-credit clinical community counseling program
