School discipline • Respect for self, respect for others, responsibility for actions. • Emphasis on the positive – classroom, positive relationships, rewards, key importance for life. Star of the Week, Feel Good Friday Phonecalls. • Sanctions – Reprimands, detentions (department and school), letters home, loss of privileges, Pupil Referral System, exclusions. • Uniform and conduct in and out of school
Homework • Homework is not optional • You should be expecting to see homework recorded in your child’s planner every week. • Fixed homework nights. • Homework should take 20-30 minutes. Not enough homework? • Either homework is not being given or (more likely) students are not writing it down. • Flag up concern with form tutor via planner. Too much homework? Too hard? • Raise issue with subject teacher and form tutor.
Bullying & Friendship issues • “Bullying” – the persistent victimisation of a person (or persons) by another person (or persons). • Students most likely to have issues with their “best” friends. • Friends fall out. Friends make up. Sometimes several times in one day. • The balance between taking bullying very seriously and accepting the to-and-fro of relationships. • The danger of ‘feeding’ a problematic situation. • In 9/10 cases, there are two sides to the story.
Personal Organisation • Timetable – two week timetable • Stick it on the fridge • Pack for the right day
Attendance and Punctuality • Link between attendance and achievement (GCSEs) • Attend every day • How ill is too ill? • Term time holidays – unauthorised • Parental responsibility (legal) • Punctuality • Are there any reasonable excuses for being late? (would they be accepted at your place of work?) • Parental responsibility (legal) • Student responsibility (late detentions)
Involvement in school life Students who take advantage of the opportunities outside of lesson time are some of our most successful students. There are opportunities for everyone. • Music lessons, choir, orchestra, concerts, drama performances, sports, dance, science club, Language clubs, reading clubs, ICT and more. • Give it a go • Year 7 Residential
Did you know . . . ? That there are lots of additional study tasks on MOODLE VLE. All students have a logon and password MOODLE VLE (virtual learning environment) available through school website. Same logon and password as school network. No assumption that you have ICT/internet at home.
Did you know . . . ?Most learning doesn’t happen at school! Children spend only 15% of their time at school. They spend more time asleep (33 %) than they do at school. Most of their time (52 %) is at home, awake.
Did you know . . . ? That we record all incidents and praises on ‘e portal’YOUcan see this at home to also monitor your child. See form tutor for eportal!

Limit the use of Xbox, computer and mobile phone 6.Offer to baby sit your child’s phone for an hour while they do their homework
5. Build up their skills To do well at school, students need concentration, memory and sequencing skills. The best games to do these are Snap, Uno, Chess, Monopoly, Battleships and Jigsaws.
4. Take time to make time What was your best lesson today? Why? Explain to me the most challenging thing you learned today. What is the most interesting thing you learned/did today? Check the homework diary and planner. Check that bags are packed and ready the night before. Read everyday and discuss it together. Talk about your child’s work with them:
