The mission was launched on April 16, 1972 and landed back on Earth on April 27. The shuttle was launched from Kennedy space center at 12:54:00 p.m.
The astronauts that flew in Apollo 16 were John W. Young, Mission Commander, Thomas K. Mattingly II, Command Charles M. Duke Jr., Lunar Module Pilot.
Apollo 16 was apart of the lunar landing mission. The major objective of the mission was to investigate the lunar surface in the Descartes highland area because it was considered to be representative of much of the Moon's surface.
The purpose of Apollo 16 was a program intended to provide the technical basis for landing on the Moon. Apollo 16 was the tenth manned mission in the program and its purpose was to act as a re-run of Apollo 15.
It took 71 hours and 2 minutes to reach the lunar surface. • They collected 95.8 kilograms of moon rocks. • John Young was the only crewmember to have flown a mission prior to Apollo 16. He flew Gemini 3, Gemini 10 and Apollo 10. • A malfunction in the main propulsion system of the Lunar Module almost scrubbed the landing to the Moon's surface, but Young and Duke ultimately spent three days exploring the Descartes highland region of the Moon. • John Young and Charles Duke tested the speed and performance capabilities of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) and were able to reach a new high speed of almost 11 miles per hour.
