Vocab. • The Male Urinary and Sexual System Items in bold correspond to the drawingThe bladder is emptied by way of the urethra, a tube passing through the prostate gland. The main function of the prostate is to supply fluid for sperm that has been collected in the seminal vesicles. Ejaculation is when the seminal vesicles and prostate empty. The seminal vesicles are supplied by the vas deferens from the epididymis, a tightly coiled, tube next to the testicle that provides for the storage, transmission, and maturation of sperm. Before ejaculation, the Cowper's glands secrete an alkaline fluid that neutralizes any urine that may be left in the urethra. The fluid also has a lubricating quality. Because these glands are often spared in a prostatectomy, they may continue to function, even though there is no ejaculate
Male Information • The Male Reproductive System • Testes / Testicles> serves 2 major functions: (1) the production of testosterone (the male sex hormone) (2) the production of sperm • Scrotum>the testes “hang” outside the male’s body within a sac of skin called the scrotum. The scrotum helps regulate the proper temperature for maximum sperm production. • Epididymis> a J-shaped tube located on the back of each testicle. The epididymis acts as a storage chamber for sperm. Sperm remains in the epididymis for 2 to 4 days until it matures and gains the ability to move (swim / locomotion). • Penis> the external sexual organ of the male. The organ by which the male delivers sperm into the female’s body. • Vas deferens>an 18” tube that receives sperm from the epididymis of each testicle. • Urethra>the Vas deferens joins the urethra tube that passes through the penis to the outside of the male’s body. The urethra carries semen & sperm to the outside of the body. • Seminal vesicles • Cowper’s gland >all three of these structures produce fluids that mix with sperm to form semen • Prostate gland • *these fluids nourish the sperm and lubricate the passage ways which sperm must travel • J. Ejaculatory ducts> tubes lined with muscles-as semen passes through these tubes (ducts), the • muscles contract and force semen out of the male’s body. This is commonly known as an ejaculation • ***For your information>> the average male ejaculation contains about 400 million sperm cells in a about 1/10th of an ounce of semen
