Tuttu to Ten Math Unit for K3/K4 Created by: Patti Lloyd Joan Bennett Rod Lloyd
Tuttu to Ten • This unit came to be through interacting with K3/K4 students as we rode the bus with them to and from school. We found these young students loved to look for and count the caribou on the way. What began by simply learning to count singles and groups of caribou and the concept of how many, transformed into discussing the importance of caribou to our families. • We began by looking at what was important to the students. • ILF: Environmental Realm
Tuttu to Ten • Environmental Realm • OU (Overarching Understanding) A person becomes a provider for his or her family through education and preparation. • EQ (Essential Question) What skills, understandings, beliefs, and values does a person need in order to be a good provider?
Tuttu to Ten • ILF Performance Expectations • Environmental, Beginner, Hunting & Survival • Hunter as a provider • The student demonstrates an understanding of the skills that a person needs to be a good provider by.. • Watching, listening to and indentifying natural features, living things and phenomena • Exhibits awareness of his/her surrondings through conservation oriented behaviors… • Describes how a good hunter helps the community • Being helpful to others when they are gathering food • Describing the seasonal nature of animal behavior.

Tuttu to Ten • Content Area OUs & EQs NSBSD Math, K-3-12 Math • OU: Harmony is evident in mathematics, in the environment, and in our relationship with our environment. • EQ: How can cultural traditions help us understand math? • EQ: Where does math come from? • EQ: How do we communicate mathematical ideas? • EQ: What is the relationship between patterns and mathematical thinking?
Tuttu to Ten • Topical Understandings & Essential Questions • OU: Inupiat traditions tell us, you don’t take more than what you need. • EQ: How does counting help us to know how many caribou? • OU: Math helps keep our caribou herd healthy. • EQ: How do we count?
Tuttu to Ten • Performance Assessment: • You are a provider for your family and village. You are working to help keep the caribou herd around your village healthy. You will be using numbers and counting to find out how many caribou to catch for your family and to provide for the community while keeping the herd healthy. You will use math words, tools and materials to show your thinking.
Tuttu to Ten • Books and games to build both knowledge and skills. • Discussions about the importance of caribou to our families. • Guest speakers that tell stories about hunting caribou and taking care of the herd. • Visit web sites: • How young caribou grow and depend on their mothers for food and safety. • What caribou eat, how they move to find food. • How young caribou grow to healthy adults.
Tuttu to Ten • Home Letter: • We asked parents to discuss how tuttu is used in their house with their children. • Do you use tuttu at home? • How many tuttu do you use each year? • What is your families favorite way to eat tuttu?
Tuttu to Ten • How many tuttu does your family use in one year? • Five • Lots • Three • Teacher Patti: “Three?” • No, I am four. • One thousand! • Teacher Patti: “We use 4 every year.” • Four, four, four, four.....
