MECHANICS OF 4TH INTERDEPARTMENTAL DEBATE COMPETITION 1. All the departments are invited to join the competition with two teams to represent them. 2. PNU-DS members are the “coaches” of respective departments to assist the participants for one week (January 4-9, 2009) in debating. Coaches are not coming from the same department they are to coach to maintain the competition’s veracity.

  3. 3. This is a three-day competition, where elimination rounds are done on January 11, Monday, quarter finals and semi-finals on January 13, Wednesday, and final round on a January 15, Friday.

  4. 4. Categories of motions for each round are as follows: A. Popular Culture- 1st elimination round (random match-ups) B. Environment- 2nd elimination round (power matching, i.e. 1st placer versus last) C. Gender- 3rd elimination round (power matching) D. Media- quarter finals (knock-out) E. Politics- semi-finals (knock-out) F. Education- finals

  5. 5. Teams are given three motions to veto on. Rules on veto are given on the day of the competition 6. Swing teams are to debate if number of participants is inadequate for the matches. These teams are coming from Professor Matthew Nepomuceno’s participants on his thesis on Oral Proficiency. These students do not have formal trainings or direct connection with the society. 7. Adjudicators for the debate matches are the PNU-DS members.
