AMS-02 TCS Overview Designed to dissipate 2600W from various sources while maintaining components within specified limits and maximizing cryo endurance. Utilizes passive (MLI, optical coatings, heat pipes, etc.) and active (heaters, pumped loops, etc.) means. Majority of heat is rejected via dedicated radiators.
Main Radiators • Dissipate heat from electronics mounted to inner skin • Ram 525 W • Wake 812 W • Imbedded ammonia heat pipes • Heaters mounted to inner skin • Outer surface is white paint (SG121FD) • CAB Loop Heat Pipe condenser mounted to Wake radiator outer skin
Tracker Radiators Reject heat from Tracker Thermal Control System via condensers bolted to inner skin (144 W total) Embedded ammonia heat pipes White Paint on outer skin
Zenith Radiators 4 radiators mounted to top of payload Each radiator rejects heat from a cryocooler (60-150W) via two Loop Heat Pipe Loop Heat Pipes flow directly through radiator. Top skin is covered with Silver-Teflon tape
Heat Pipes Standard axial groove ammonia heat pipes Embedded in Main (815g) and Tracker (368g) radiators Mounted to CAB (11g) Mounted to USS (23g)
Loop Heat Pipes • Two Loop heat Pipes (154 g ammonia) transfer heat from CAB to Wake Main radiator • These can only function when AMS is vertical • Thermal GSE on CAB needed to charge magnet when AMS is horizontal • 8 Loop Heat Pipes (431 g propylene) transfer heat from cryocoolers to Zenith radiator
Cryocoolers Two mounted on Upper Support Ring, two on Lower Support Ring Lift heat from cryo system (Vapor cooled shield #4) Rejects waste heat to redundant Loop Heat Pipes Cryos need to operate in SSPF, Canister and PLB Thermal GSE (fans) needed to cool Zenith Radiators in SSPF and Canister
Tracker Thermal Control System Tracker Thermal Control System (TTCS) used to cool the Tracker located inside the bore of the magnet. Two-phase, pumped CO2 cooling system Liquid CO2 is pumped through the Tracker, where it evaporates, maintaining uniform temperatures Vapor is transported to condenser mounted on Tracker Radiators, where it is liquefied before returning to pump. Heaters and Peltier coolers maintain system in equilibrium at a selectable set point.
MLI Most surfaces that are not radiators are covered with MLI blankets. Blankets are appropriately attached, vented and grounded.
