  1. Results of LP monitoring of Istria peninsula, Croatia Željko Andreić1Petra Korlević, Ana Bonaca, Mirna Kramar, Doroteja Andreić and Korado Korlević Višnjan Education Center, Istarska 5, 51463 Višnjan, Croatia 1speaker, permanent address: Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Eng., University of Zagreb, Pierottijeva 6, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia, E-mail: zandreic@rgn.hr

  2. Overview 1. Introduction 2. A short history of our efforts in Croatia 3. LP monitoring methods and results 4. Modeling 5. Conclusions

  3. Croatia

  4. Istria peninsula

  5. A short history of our activities 2002. 1992: first popular articles about LP 1998: Višnjan obs. starts to discover new asteroids 2001: LP blocks Visnjan obs. asteroid program after approx 1350 discoveries 2002-3: first attempts to measure LP in Istria 2006-7: systematic measurements and modelling 2003.

  6. Monitoring methods: Sky quality meter

  7. Monitoring methods: all-sky cameras

  8. Monitoring methods: all-sky cameras 2 mirror + digital WA lens + 35 mm film

  9. Places visited

  10. Results - around Višnjan SQM: 20,5-21,0 Tičan Višnjan

  11. Results 2 - southern coastal region Cape Kamenjak Vodnjan Pula SQM: 19,3 18,9 21,0

  12. Results 3 - middle Istria Kanfanar Savičenta SQM: 20,8 21,0

  13. Results summary - sky brightness at zenith (mag/arcsec2) • Natural: 22,0-21,5 • Tičan: 21,0 • Savičenta: 21,0 • Rt Kamenjak: 21,0 • Kanfanar:20,8 • Višnjan: 20,7 • Premantura: 19,8 • Vodnjan: 19,3 • Pula: 18,9

  14. Satellite imaging (Cinzano at al.)

  15. Satellite imaging + modelling (Cinzano at al.)

  16. Statistical model (M. Walker 1966.-1977.) Population cenzus + Walker's law: Ad_Bright=constND-2,5 ?? Ad_Bright D N

  17. Statistical model (Walker) latitude longitude

  18. Statistical model versus satelite imaging model

  19. Statistical model versus field measurements

  20. Conclusions 1. Walker's model and satelite imaging model are in agreement, but Walker's model provides better resolution. 2. SQM unusable near open lights, measurements in rural areas in agreement with models, very simple to use. 3. NO NATURAL SKY IN ISTRIA ANYMORE! 4. best places have at least half a magnitude of LP added sky brightness.

  21. Future is "bright"

  22. Future is "bright" 2

  23. At the end: Slovenia....
