  2. D-Day • June 6, 1944 • Operation Overlord • Allied landings on the coast of Normandy • Canada had a major role

  3. Total Numbers • Allies had landed as many as 155,000 troops in France by sea and air, 6,000 vehicles including 900 tanks, 600 guns and about 4,000 tons of supplies and, astonishingly, had achieved complete surprise in doing it. • This time before dawn, 230 heavy bombers from RCAF No.6 Group pounded German shore batteries with 860 tons of bombs.

  4. Canadians on Juno Beach • 14,000 Canadian soldiers were to land on the beaches. • 516 Canadian Paratroopers were to drop behind enemy lines by parachute or glider.

  5. Canadians in Normandy • Totals: • 18,444 Canadians • 5,021 were killed

  6. June 7th - August 25th, 1944 • Allies marched through France to Paris • July 25th, 1944, more than 1,500 casualties of whom about 450 were kill. Except for Dieppe, it was the bloodiest day of the war for Canada.
