The sixties • In the United States, "the Sixties", as they are known in popular culture, is a term used by historians, journalists, and other objective academics; in some cases nostalgically to describe the counterculture and social revolution near the end of the decade; and pejoratively to describe the era as one of irresponsible excess and flamboyance. The decade was also labeled the Swinging Sixties because of the fall or relaxation of some social taboos especially relating to sexism and racism that occurred during this time.
The women that made the sixties • Two women, two ideals: Marilyn Monroe was famous for her curves, while Twiggy's boyish figure caused madness also Edie Sedgewick my personal favouritethe woman who made Andy Warhol. While women everywhere aspired to one or the other, they were also rather caught up in the other feminine icon of the time: the contraceptive pill.
The Men of the 60s • Martin Luther, JFK and George Best. Bobby Moore, Andy Warhol and Sonny Liston. The 1960s male certainly had no shortage of role models... • The BEATLES – Some say that The Beatles influence on rock music and popular culture was immense.[who?] Their commercial success started an almost immediate wave of changes—including a shift from US global dominance of rock and roll to UK acts, from soloists to groups, from professional songwriters to self-penned songs, and to changes in fashion. They were a rock and roll group made up of four men from Liverpool, England.
The MODS • When women realised things where changing, it wasn’t required to be tall, slim or care what society think, this is when mods where revolutioned all dressing the same no matter what sex. • A skinhead is a member of a subculture that originated among working class youths in the United Kingdom in the 1960s, and then spread to other parts of the world. Named for their close-cropped or shaven heads, the first skinheads were greatly influenced by West Indian (specifically Jamaican) rude boys and British mods, in terms of fashion, music and lifestyle.[1] Originally, the skinhead subculture was primarily based on those elements, not politics or race.[2] Since then, however, attitudes toward race and politics have become factors by which some skinheads align themselves. The political spectrum within the skinhead scene ranges from the far right to the far left, although many skinheads are apolitical.[citation needed] Fashion-wise, skinheads range from a clean-cut 1960s mod-influenced style to less-strict punk- and hardcore-influenced styles.
ANDY WARHOL & EDIE SEDGEWICK • Edith Minturn "Edie" Sedgwick (April 20, 1943 – November 16, 1971) was an American actress, socialite, fashion model and heiress. She is best known for being one of Andy Warhol's superstars. Sedgwick became known as "The Girl of the Year" in 1965 after starring in several of Warhol's short films in the 1960s.[1][2] She was dubbed an "It Girl",[3] while Vogue magazine also named her a "Youthquaker”
The Events • There was the Great Train Robbery, Concorde's first flight and the Baby Boom. But did the moon landing overshadow every other event that marked the 1960s– There was the death of Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol made it, MLK ‘I have a dream speech’, The Bikini was introduced, NYCs great blackout, The Beatles, Nelson Mandella, LA riots, 6 days war in middle east, Star Trek, Martin Luther King assisnated.
