KEY CONCEPT The respiratory and circulatory systems bring oxygen and nutrients to the cells.
Oxygen-poor blood Oxygen-rich blood The respiratory and circulatory systems work together to maintain homeostasis. • The circulatory system transports blood and other materials to and from cells • brings supplies to cells • carries away wastes • separates oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich blood
There are three major functions of the circulatory system. • 1) transporting blood, gases, water, and nutrients to cells • 2) collecting waste materials (CO2) • 3) maintaining body temperature
On pg. 72 create a bubble map of the Circulatory System arteries Pg. 910-915 in book veins Circulatory System Red blood cells hemoglobin capillaries heart • You need a description and picture for each
The system includes : • heart pumps blood throughout body • arteries move blood away from heart • Oxygen-rich blood • veinsmove blood back to the heart • Oxygen-poor blood • capillaries get blood to and from tissues • *Where gas, water, and nutrient exchange occur Blood Vessels
red blood cells- pick up oxygen in the lungs and delivers it to all the body cells; picks up CO2 • O2 binds to hemoglobin- gives blood its reddish color • Blood becomes bright red only when it absorbs oxygen

How does the respiratory and circulatory system interact? • Think: What does the respiratory system bring into your body? • How does the circulatory system distribute that product? • What waste product does the blood pick up from the cells? • How does our body get rid of that waste?
The lungs bring oxygen into the body • the circulatory system (blood stream) carries that oxygen to all of the body’s cells. • The blood stream also picks up cells’ waste (carbon dioxide) • expels that waste as carbon dioxide when we exhale (breathe out). • How does the respiratory and circulatory system interact?
