EXAMINATION 1…. • CLAUDIUS PLANS TO USE ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN TO SPY ON HAMLET. WHY? HOW MIGHT CLAUDIUS KNOW THIS INFORMATION? • CLAUDIUS: Welcome, dear Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. I’ve wanted to see you for a long time now, but I sent for you so hastily because I need your help right away. You’ve probably heard about the “change” that’s come over Hamlet—that’s the only word for it, since inside and out he’s different from what he was before. I can’t imagine what’s made him so unlike himself, other than his father’s death. Since you both grew up with him and are so familiar with his personality and behavior, I’m asking you to stay a while at court and spend some time with him. See if you can get Hamlet to have some fun, and find out if there’s anything in particular that’s bothering him, so we can set about trying to fix it.
EXAMINATION 1 CT’D… • WHAT DOES CLAUDIUS WANT? • HOW MIGHT CLAUDIUS GO ABOUT GETTING WHAT HE WANTS? • HOW MIGHT CLAUDIUS ACT IN THIS PARTICULAR SCENE?

Tell me, Voltemand, what’s the news from the king of Norway • VOLTEMAND: Greetings to you too, your Highness. As soon as we raised the matter, the king sent out messengers to stop his nephew’s war preparations, which he originally thought were directed against Poland but learned on closer examination were directed against you. He was very upset that Fortinbras had taken advantage of his being old and sick to deceive him, and he ordered Fortinbras’s arrest. Fortinbras swore never to threaten Denmark again.
EXAMINATION 2 CT’D… • HOW MIGHT THIS HELP CLAUDIUS? • WHAT DOES CLAUDIUS WANT IN THIS SCENE? • WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT SHAKESPEARE CHOOSES TO PUT THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION IN THE PLAY?
EXAMINATION 3…. • HAMLET PRETENDS TO BE CRAZY! • POLONIUS: “This business is well ended. My liege and madam, to expostulate. What majesty should be, what duty is,Why day is day, night night, and time is time,Were nothing but to waste night, day, and time. Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit, And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes,I will be brief: your noble son is mad.Mad call I it, for, to define true madness,What is ’t but to be nothing else but mad ?But let that go.” • WHAT IS POLONIOUS TRYING TO SAY HERE? HOW DOES POLONIOUS KNOW ABOUT HAMLET’S CRAZY WAYS? WHAT DOES HE WANT IN THIS SCENE? HOW DOES HIS SCENE PARTNER REACT?

(he turns to one of the actors)—Oh, you, I’m glad to see you. (turns back to all of them)—Welcome, my good friends. (turns to another actor)—Oh, it’s you! You’ve grown a beard since I saw you last. Are you going to put a beard on me too? (turns to an actor dressed as a woman) —Well hello, my young lady friend. You’ve grown as much as the height of a pair of platform shoes at least! I hope your voice hasn’t changed yet. (to the whole company)—All of you are most welcome here. We’ll get right to business. First, a speech. Come on, give us a little speech to whet our appetites. A passionate speech, please. • THE PLAY WITHIN A PLAY----- “THE MURDER OF GONZAGO.”
THE PLAY WITHIN THE PLAY… • “Shakespeare was, of course, masterful in the use of all of these resources and techniques, so perhaps his preoccupation with them in this play within a play was more intended to be a larger critique of creative processes, and the dramatic process in particular. Shakespeare seems to be asking, through the clever staging of this subplot or sub-play, what elements of the creative process are most important, and which elements are most likely to determine the effect of the play in terms of the degree to which it engages the viewer and helps him or her to comprehend the play’s central themes.” • ***The above information was taken from (www.articlemyriad.com)
THE PLAY WITHING THE PLAY CT’D…. • Shakespeare uses this idea of “the play within the play” as a way of creatively reminding the reader what Is happening in the story. What is happening in this particular story of Hamlet? • How does the play that Hamlet chooses to perform, The Murder of Gonzago, relate to the story of Hamlet? • How does Claudius and Gertrude react to the play? Do they react in a similar fashion, or differently?
THE END OF ACT II…“THE ROGUE” • COMPARATIVE VIDEO WORKSHOP. • WHAT IS A ROGUE? WHAT IS A SOLILOQUY?
A ROGUE… • Rogue : [rohg] = ipa • noun, verb, rogued, ro·guing, adjective–noun • 1.a dishonest, knavish person; scoundrel. • 2.a playfully mischievous person; scamp: The youngest boys are little rogues • 3.a tramp or vagabond.
A SOLILOQUY… • A soliloquy is a literary device often used in drama whereby a character relates his or her thoughts and feelings without addressing any of the other characters. Soliloquy is distinct from a monologue and an aside.
“ROGUE SOLILOQUY” • Now I’m alone. Oh, what a mean low-life I am! It’s awful that this actor could force his soul to feel made-up feelings in a work of make-believe. He grew pale, shed real tears, became overwhelmed, his voice breaking with feeling and his whole being, even, meeting the needs of his act—and all for nothing. For Hecuba! • EXAMINE… • HANDOUT OF ROGUE SOLILOQUY.
