DE Certificate in Communication Process • Required Courses • Interpersonal Communication(EDRD*2020DE) • An introduction to dyadic and small-group communication, focusing on communication styles and effectiveness with attention to verbal and nonverbal communication, listening behaviour and conflict. Interpersonal communication provides the foundation for understanding the essentials of communication within human relationships.) • Organizational Communication(EDRD*3140DE) • Introduction to the study of the communication process, with emphasis on the examination of symbols, meaning, patterns of miscommunication and their correctives. (Offered through distance education format only.) • 3 of 4 of the Following Courses • International Communication.(EDRD*3160DE) • An inquiry into the role of communication in global development. Emphasis is on the application of interpersonal, inter-cultural communication and the mass media in the development process. • Educational Communication(EDRD*3120DE) • An examination of learning principles, theories and practices. Emphasis is on communication for non-formal teaching-learning situations including participatory approaches to teaching and learning. Various approaches and contexts for educational communication are examined. Students develop community service learning projects that foster effective skills development in non-formal instructional design. • Social Processes in Mediated Communication(EDRD*3180) • Introduction to dyadic communication, small-group communication, mediated work groups and online learning in mediated environments. The focus of this course will be on communication style, effectiveness, and online dynamics and processes in asynchronous environments. • Leadership Development in Small Organizations(EDRD*4120DE) • The main theories of leadership are examined through exploration of the current literature and practice. Emphasis will be placed on the communication challenges facing leaders in small organizations and the importance of developing a culture of shared leadership.
