Welcome to APUSHSeptember 5th 2013 Do Now….
Thesis writingStep 1 What is the Question Asking me to do? (rephrase question) • This step is imperative for student success • Common words used in questions that students should know: • To what extent? (asking how much, never 100% or 0% • Analyze (asking how and why) College Board Definition : “to separate into constituent parts or elements, to determine the elements or essential features of. • Impact (analyze the impact) short and long term effects or changes • Significance- importance (why does this matter) • Compare and Contrast • Explain- to make clear or plain to make known in detail (college board definition) • Interpret- explain the meaning of • Assess the validity (evaluate)- how is this true? Provide evidence or counter evidence to the claim. (this is a very common one) • Justify- present evidence to show good reason for • Discuss- to talk over, to write about, to consider or examine (there is usually a follow up question to guide the “discussion”
Step 2- brainstorm • This is where content knowledge comes into play • Goal is to come up with at least 10 terms to get students to be thinking how to tackle the question
Step 3 Organize Concepts • How can you group your evidence evidence? • Are you being asked about two different topics or time frames? Can they be categorized? Are there similarities or differences?
Step 4- Create your Thesis Statement • A thesis statement is one sentence (can be a lengthy one). • Use these questions to assess the validity of your statement… • Does the thesis attempt to answer the question • Do you have a defensible thesis • Does it ATFQ? ( answer the FULL question) • Did you narrow the scope (provide pramaters) • Is there a clear roadmap for the essay • Is the WHOLE time period covered?
Step 5- Write the Essay • Intros should follow the 2+1+1 model • Start with 2 background sentences to set the stage (better than repeating the question) • State 1 sentence which clearly states your thesis and position • State one sentence that will indicate how your essay will be organized (the roadmap)
Now lets practice with the following question.. • Analyze the origins of slavery in North America. • Focus only on the Intro and thesis for now
Homework • Chapter 3 terms due Monday, along with a draft of essay. • We will use this draft to compare to AP rubric next week, then you will revise it for a grade the following week.
