The Sand Creek Massacre Taylor Feinman, Grace Watkins, and Caitlin Bullock
What was the Sandcreek Massacre? The Sand Creek Massacre was a battle between Native Americans and miners. This massacre happened because the miners were trying to build and mine on Native American Territory. The Native Americans did not agree with this, so they battled. Native Americans attacked wagon trains and mining camps.
Who was involved? • The Cheyenne tribe • The Arapahos tribe • Sioux tribe • Comanche tribe • Kiowa tribe • Miners
What Happened? This massacre took place on November 29th and 30th, 1864. Miners and settlers were intruding the Native Americans land. In result, the Native Americans invaded wagon trains and mining sites. This took place from Colorado to Oklahoma. The Colorado created a militia to fight off the Native American tribes.
This massacre was very important. The miners and the Indians disagreed. Miners wanted to mine on their land, even though it was Indian territory. The Indians did not agree with this and fought back. Whites usually don’t agree with the Indians, and also they don’t stick to their word. They sign treaties agreeing with the Indians, but they usually do not follow them.
The Effects This massacre had many effects on the tribes involved. Since the Indians were upset about the miners on their land, they fought back, with great fear, but with strength. A positive effect to this massacre was that the Indians were telling the miners that they do not want them on their territory, so they knew.
