Common Core • National Standards shared in 46 states • To prepare students for college and career • Emphasis is on critical thinking skills, not rote memorization • Connect learning in all disciplines • Law AB 484: STAR state testing has been replaced by Smarter Balance • 3-yr moratorium on using tests to measure accountability
Common Core • Reading • Less emphasis on fiction and more reading and analysis of informational texts (books, articles, primary sources) • Updated textbooks will be released in 2015 • Writing • Less narrative, more fact-based • Emphasis on pulling evidence from text to support a claim (an opinion or argument)
