Focus of Culture • United States as a multicultural population • African American increased by 12.3% • Hispanic populations increased by 43% • Hindu-Indian increased by 5.8% • Culture competency • National Goal: Health People 2010 by the US DHHS. • ANA Code of Ethics: “Care unrestricted by social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems.” (ANA Code of Ethics, 2011). • Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice: Standards for baccalaureate graduates to understand the ways cultural, racial, socioeconomic, religious, and lifestyle variables are expressed.
