  1. Sixth Year Parents Information Evening St. David’s Holy Faith Secondary School, Greystones, Co. Wicklow Thursday, 5th September 2019 7: 30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

  2. Structure of Presentation: • One hour & thirty minutes presentation on Sixth Year • Three speakers this evening: • School Principal – Ms. O’ Doherty • School Deputy Principal – Mr. Carey • Guidance Counsellor – Ms. Brady

  3. The Journey of a Sixth Year student: • Homework (sample questions, feedback, oral presentation, extra classes) • Study (Logos Study – commences Friday, 13th September from 3: 50 pm – 5: 50 pm) & Night Study with parental support from 7 – 9 pm • Student Improvement Plan(s) – S.I.P • Research shows that students who excel academically, study (Logos & Night) with 48% of the class of 2019, 41% of the class of 2018, 32% of class of 2017 attaining one or more HI & H2 in Higher L.C. subjects

  4. Resources available for study include past examination papers, marking schemes, Chief Inspectors reports and study tools such MathsTutor. These key tools for exam success available on www.examinations.ie • Positive mindset: parents keep talking with your son(s)/daughter(s) as this year progresses • Pacing of work for a whole year – avoid burnout

Guidance in St. David’s Holy Faith Secondary School • CAO information evening will take place here in St. David’s on October 15th 2019 from 7:30 pm – 9 pm • Guidance Counselling in St. David’s involves classes throughout the academic year informing Sixth Years on CAO options, DARE applications, HEAR applications, SUSI • Individual meetings on a one-to-one basis with all Sixth Year students throughout the academic year, 2019 – 2020 (started Monday of this week)

Key dates: • September 18th 2019 – Higher Options – RDS • October 15th 2019 - CAO information Evening for parents • November 5th 2019 - CAO online registration begins • Individual guidance appointments on-going • Weekly Guidance Class for Sixth Years • Research: • Course content, ALL entry requirements and genuine order of preference key for students • Supplementary access routes (HEAR/DARE) • Key dates/CAO deadlines • University Open Days • Weekly College/Career talks on-going in school

  8. Supplementary Access Routes DARE • This is the disability access route to education for school leavers whose disabilities have had a negative impact on their education • WHY apply? DARE offers support in college and reduced points on CAO offers • HOW do I apply? Apply through the CAO, by Feb 1st 2020 • Gather evidence of disability documents now from website www.accesscollege.ie

Supplementary Access Routes HEAR • This higher education access route is an admissions route for school leavers who for social, financial and/or cultural reasons are under represented in education • WHY apply? There are reduced points for CAO offers by participating colleges • Application is through the CAO, by Feb 1st 2020 • Time to start gathering all relevant documentation now • www.accesscollege.ie

Role of the Sixth Year Year Head • Ms. Cavanagh – Sixth Year Year Head • Dual role - pastoral and behaviour • A positive and affirmative role, working with your son &/or daughter, on a day-to-day basis • If you as a parent have a concern, Ms. Cavanagh, the Year Head, is the first port of call • Regular Assemblies held with Sixth Year students and Deputy Principal.

Pastoral • Mentoring: a wonderful facility for our Sixth Year students whereby they meet with a teacher who volunteers to act as a mentor advising on study, revision, homework, study – life balance • Regular meetings with students experiencing difficulties in school • Liaising with school management on planning the year’s key events pertaining to Sixth Year • Year Head works with all departments in school such as R.E. for retreats, Humanities for field-trips & the Languages and Practicals departments for State Exams.

Behaviour • To ensure school code of behaviour is fairly and consistently applied to all sixth year students re: exams, mobile phone policy, anti-bullying, lates, attendance, hair, jewellery, etc • ‘Student voice’ is always to the fore of St. David’s Holy Faith Secondary School • Assemblies are used as a key communicative tool in ensuring school policies are applied and respected by all students.

  15. Key Events for school year 2019 - 2020 • Thursday, 5th September 2019: Sixth Years Study Skills Workshop • Thursday, 19th September 2019: L.C. Geography Field-Trip 2019 • October 2019: L.C. Biology Field-Trip 2019 – individual class teachers arrange within double class • Tuesday, 8th October 2019: Sixth Year Parent-Teacher meeting, 4: 15 p.m. – 6: 45 p.m • Tuesday, 15th October 2018: Info Evening meeting on CAO, 7: 30 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Third & Sixth Years Modular Exams: November 22nd– November 29th 2019 (six days) • Third & Sixth Years Mock Exams: February 5th – 15th February 2020 (nine days) • State Exams (L.C.): June 3rd - June 23rd 2020 • St. Catherine’s Christmas Party hosted by Sixth Years: Wednesday, 11th December 2019

  17. Year Graduation Ceremony: Friday, 15th May 2020from 1: 45 p.m– 4: 15 p.m. • Sixth Year Block Study for all Sixth Years in school: Monday, 18th May 2020 – Friday, 29th May 2020 ending at 1: 05 p.m. (on the 29th May 2020) with the traditional send-off by staff of L.C. Class • Please note L.C. teachers take students out of class, if students request, for revision purposes, during the two week block study

Project work • Project work - D.C.G: has already started with project for 18 weeks with deadline 17th January 2020; Visual Art: ten-week project, January 6th – March 20th 2020; Construction: L.C. project starts October 2020 – March 2020 • L.C. Orals Francais/Espanol/Gaeilge: Awaiting dates from DES March or April 2020 • Write-ups: History/Geography/Politics & Society – last week in April 2020 • Practical One day exams: Construction Studies & Engineering May 2020
