CASS – CASE STUDIES Joan Cares for her son Craig who has mental health problems. Joan also has 3 other children and 7 grandchildren. She received a CASS payment to go for a long weekend break to Scotland. Her caring role has affected her own health, recently she has suffered a heart attack and two strokes. She commented: “If I hadn’t had the money to help me go to Scotland for a weekend I might of run away, caring can be very stressful, it was a well needed break” Pat cares for her husband Roly. She loves being in the fresh air out in the garden watching the birds. However she feels that as she is getting older and has less time that she is unable to manage to keep the garden tidy and weeded. It was identified during Pat’s carers assessment that support was required with the gardening to allow her to have a break and enjoy some leisure time. Pat said: “its great as its one less thing to worry about and in summer I can still enjoy my garden without worrying about trying to do it myself”.
