Factory Security and Traffic • Contractors – Personal identification may be required. • Make sure you stop, sign in, and check in with Security. Sign in and sign out at the end of each day. Print your name clearly for sign in. • Your vehicle and your personal belongings (back pack, cooler, etc.) are subject to inspection at any time by Security. • Contractor Leads – Be sure that you fax in the Safety Orientation Certification Form, insurance, and copy of OSHA 10 hour cards to Safety Training and Tracing, Inc. Keep a copy of everything on-site with you. Questions – contact a member of the SHE Department. These requirements can be waived by a member of the SHE Dept (by completing a OSHA 10 Hour Waiver Request Form) if you will be escorted by a Unilever Rep. while on-site and your work here is of a low risk nature. • Do not walk while talking/using a cell phone.
Factory Security & Traffic Cont'd • Crossing the street from the Visitor/Contractor Parking area into the factory – Watch yourself!!! • Smoking is allowed only in designated areas. • Unilever Restrooms and Lunch Rooms may be off limits. Check with you Project Lead. Use of vending machines is allowed in the Administration Building. • Do not walk through or enter other buildings that are not part of your work area. Use designated walk path areas when available. • PPE must be worn at all times in the Factory except within the green lines areas.
Work Vehicles... & Traffic • It is recommended to unload equipment from your vehicle and park in visitor/contractor lot. If a vehicle is needed to enter or exit the factory frequently, limit this activity to the use of one vehicle per company. • Be sure you do not block/park on a road way or marked crossing walk area. • Your company name must be displayed on the work vehicle. If you lock and leave your vehicle, Security must be able to get in touch with you if your vehicle needs to be moved! Leave you contact information with your Work Crew Leader or with Security. Otherwise, it is recommended to leave your keys in the vehicle ignition in case the vehicle has to be moved in an emergency.
Personal Conduct and Safe Behavior • Unilever has a non-discrimination and anti-harassment policy as well as a commitment to working safely. You are accountable for your conduct and following all Unilever safety requirements. Work with you Unilever Contact or contact the SHE Department with questions.
Work Practices • Each contractor is responsible for the safe and orderly storage of their work materials and equipment. The Unilever Project and Work Leads are to guide you about where and how the work area should be managed. • At the end of the work shift, make sure the work area is left clean. The floor is to be swept clean, no tools or trash left behind. • Contractors must supply their own containers for removing trash • Do not use the soap rework barrels or totes as garbage containers • Make arrangements that garbage is removed from the work area • For scrap metal, use the yellow roll off box container outside of DEFI (north) • Recycle whenever possible, ask your Unilever contact for further information • Do not stage equipment, etc. that block access to emergency equipment or building/floor exits. Any equipment or work that does block an aisle space should be approved by your Unilever Project Lead or SHE Dept. first.
Work Practices continued …… • GFI’s are required on ALL extension cords when portable electric tools are used. • Any work where you must walk on equipment, climb in pipes racks, tie off, etc. to perform a job must be reviewed first with your Unilever Project Lead so that no damage is done to production equipment or the building structure. • Cordon off all work areas with yellow or red tape as appropriate. Make sure all tape and signage stay up when work is ongoing and is promptly removed when work has ended. Tape & signage must remain if hazards are still present after the job ends for the day. • Contractors are to utilize their own tools/equipment only. There shall be no use of Unilever's equipment/tool by anyone other then Unilever employee’s.
Work Practices continued …. • Be aware the floors and stairs can be slippery. Watch your step!! • Go over with your Unilever Contact the emergency exit routes from your work area and building and where the main assembly area is located. • You must provide your own PPE. PPE and safety equipment must be in good condition and/or worn properly. This includes fall protection equipment and fire extinguishers! • If you are working near other Unilever personnel or contractors, make sure you are not in each other’s way. Discuss this with you Unilever Contact! Communicate with each other to prevent incidents and work disruptions. • If there are additional safety requirements you practice above Unilever standards, this must be communicated to Unilever SH&E Department and Project Sponsor (example, wearing Hard Hats).
Work Practices continued …. • Hot Work • You must provide your own fire extinguisher appropriate to the type of work being performed. • Barriers or screens shall be placed completely around the work area when Hot Work is being performed to contain sparks, slag. • Make sure that all combustibles are removed from work area. • Make sure the fire watch is listed by name on the Safe Work Permit. • Working At Heights – 4 ft and above • Do not set up ladders on floors that are slippery. • Maintain 3 points of contact when ascending and descending ladder. Always face the ladder! • Use "Rope and Bucket" system for example when tools are needed to be raised and lowered from elevated work level. • When fall protected is required, tie off using appropriate tie points!
Work Practices continued…. • Safe Work Permit – Some key points to remember • All Work Permits must be displayed in the work area (on the Project Board if this is being used). Everyone signed on the permit must know where the permit is located. • All work crew members must sign and review the hazards on the Safe Work Permit.Print your name on the back of the permit or on an attached paper. Check with your Project Lead. If you leave an ongoing job and will not return, cross you name off and inform the Work or Project Lead. • Everyone must have their own personal lock with identification for LOTO work • Pre-commissioning audits are needed on all work in order to return equipment to the Operations Team
Good Manufacturing Practices • No food, beverages or gum allowed in production areas • Smoking in designated areas only - ask your Hammond Plant contact • All hair that is shoulder length or longer must be tied back or contained in a hair net in all manufacturing areas • All jewelry is prohibited in the manufacturing areas of the Hammond factory with the exception of one smooth ring • No items are allowed in pockets or affixed to clothing above the waist in the manufacturing areas • Hearing protection is required in the DEFI manufacturing area and all other designated areas • Cuts, sores, infected areas and other wounds must be completely covered and protected by protective clothing or a waterproof covering
Medical • If you or one of your employees sustains an injury, the Unilever Nurse or Security can provide assistance if needed until your company medical service is contacted. In the event of a medical emergency (life threatening), the Nurse or First Responder will call 911 and will provide medical support until the EMS arrives. • Please keep in mind, it is the responsibility of your company to provide workers compensation medical treatment. The Nurse and Security can assist you with making needed phone calls. • All work related injuries or illnesses must be reported to your Unilever Representative immediately. • All incidents require an incident report. Contact anyone in the Unilever Hammond SHE Dept for help. • For any type of emergency, notify Security at ext. 498 from any plant phone, see the Guard, or call the regular phone # 473-7298 or 7498.
Quality • Do not perform work where materials, welding sparks, etc. can fall into or have direct contact to the product stream. Notify the FLM if you have occurrence of a production contamination. • Water is the only refreshment that is allowed in the manufacturing area. No food, candy, etc. No glass containers are allowed. • All lighting must be in shatter proof housing. • No jewelry
Environment • Legal compliance to environmental regulation is mandatory: • Spill reporting • No dumping • Proactive environmental performance is everyone’s responsibility, including contractors: • Recycling GOAL: 0 Landfill • Energy Reduction GOAL: 50% Reduction • Water Reduction GOAL: 75% Reduction • Questions, concerns, comments should be directed to Environmental Team
Environmental Work Practices • Recycling programs exist for: • You must provide your own waste containers to collect waste materials. Do not use “house” carts, buggies, totes for waste disposal! • All waste (recyclables & trash) must be taken to appropriately labeled CONTRACTOR dumpster • It is illegal to dump liquids into dumpsters. All liquids must be taken to Chemical Waste area & labeled using HMIS. • Report all spills to Supervisor • Batteries • Bulbs • Electronics • Contaminated Soap • Fatty Acids (sewers, melts) • Scrap Metal • Wood (pallets, crates, scraps) • Concrete & Asphalt • Glass • Cardboard • Supersacks • Cello • Green Bands • Stretchwrap & Plastic Bags • Lexan • Mixed Recycling (bottles, cans, paper, plastics #1-7) • Employee Give Away
