IEC / ABNT International Electrotechnical Commission Is the world´s leading organization that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. The Brazilian Association of Technical Standards Is the organization of technical standardization in Brazil and the exclusive Brazilian representative for the international and regional entities: • ISO (International Organization for Standardization) • IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) • COPANT (Pan American Technical Standards Commission) • AMN (Mercosur Standardization Association)

IEC TC 111 /ABNT CE 111 Subjects: Ecodesign, material declaration, test methods, cleaner production, recycling, etc. IEC TC 111 – International environmental standardization for electrical and electronic products and systems Objective: To prepare necessary guidelines, basic and horizontal standards, including technical reports, in the environmental area. ABNT CE 03:111.01 – Brazilian environmental standardization for electrical and electronic products and systems Objective: Providing the Brazilian standards for environmentally friendly electronics, acting as a mirror of the IEC TC 111.

RESULTS FROM ABNT CE 111 • BRAZILIAN STANDARDS EQUIVALENT TO IEC TC 111 • Environmentally conscious design • Management system for hazardous substances in products and electrical and electronic components • Guidance for evaluation of products with respect to substance - use restrictions in electrical and electronic products • Environmental information on electrical and electronic equipment • Material declaration for products of and for the electrotechnical industry • NATIONAL STANDARD UNDER PUBLICATION • Waste electrical and electronic equipment – Requirements for the activity of reverse manufacturing (for recyclers)

MOTIVATIONS FOR THE BRAZILIAN REQUIREMENTS TO RECYCLERS The requirements for reverse logistics systems for electronic equipments are essential to implement the National Policy on Solid Waste Encourage the development of competence in electronics recycling, objecting to reduce damage to the environment Ensure that processes adopted are consistent with best practices in waste management, avoiding incorrect destination of materials Ensure occupational health and safety of those involved in the processes of electronics recycling
