A Grade 1 Centre. What is the vision? • The Learner – We will put the learner at the centre of everything we do. • Quality – We will deliver the highest possible quality in all we do • Impact – We will achieve the highest possible impact we can on the economic and social wellbeing of individual learners and on Belfast and the region.
Who does it ? • Staff in the Centre working WITH the students. • Centre Managers – Paul Stewart, Alan Edgar, Alan Serplus. • Programme Area Manager – Felix Hagan • Support from Directorate and Senior manager for STEM
How is it done? • Staff ethos & expertise • Management of the Centres • Curriculum Development, Delivery and Enrichment. Pastoral Care. Careers Advice. • Links with Industry • Industry standard equipment.
Staff Ethos and Expertise • Built up over a number of years • Appointment strategy – Industrial experience and specialist knowledge e.g. - maths taught by engineers • Staff allowed to develop their own subject areas • Staff encouraged to make subjects highly practical • Staff workroom re-designed to foster informal and co-operative working. • Continual updating of Qualifications / Expertise.
Management of Centres • Standard Course Blackboard (BB) Sites • Joint Centre BB site with team meetings, meeting schedules and timetables all available • Course Portfolio via BB with Standard with templates that build towards SER Review and eti inspections. • Development & Delivery of Cross modular assignments.
Curriculum development, delivery and Enrichment. • Importance of “stretch” and “challenge” • Project Based Learning - Learning by doing. Eg Embedded systems project board. • Each student – own toolkit. • VLE extensively used. On line testing eg Maths. • Enrichment – ICT, Soldering, Further Maths.

Pastoral Care and eISLA • Staff try to identify with students. • Early intervention of support resources. • Career paths emphasised during lessons. • Specialist career days and visiting lecturers. • Student encouraged have aims and set goals.
