To reduce the number of fatal accidents in farming - every year around 45 people die in farming accidents To get farmers to take ownership of their and others’ health and safety To find a better method of communication with farmers recognising: Their need for clear information and that Farmers don’t like being lectured to and aren’t interested in advertising campaigns The challenge

A refreshed programme of activity was agreed by the Board in 2008 with six main work streams: Make the promise campaign Farm Safety and Health Awareness Days Agricultural shows Kit and machinery supply Promoting uptake of training & farming vocational qualifications Stakeholder engagement Agriculture revisited

  4. Engage farmers emotionally Make the Promise to yourself, your family and your farm – not to HSE/government MAKE the promise KEEP the promise And to a lesser extent: SHOW the promise SHARE the promise Strategy Phases 1 - 3

  7. 29,000 farmers signed up to the campaign excellent response rate to direct mail Good press coverage Farmers agreed with tone and messages… “Well looking through you think I’ve done all of this near enough, you can see yourself driving a tractor with a big silage bale that’s fallen off, its happened to all of us, everyone of those you look at and you think I’ve done that” (OLDER FARMER, SHROPSHIRE) “It makes you think you could be in the same predicament seeing that.. it stops you thinking that these accidents just happen to someone else” (YOUNGER FARMER, YORKSHIRE) Results to date

  10. Menu of options available Reflect different ways in which stakeholders may wish to be involved in supporting the campaign. May be adapted to suit each organisations needs For example – a supply of MTP postcards will be made available for Agricultural colleges who have expressed interest. Stakeholder Toolkit

  11. Hosting events for members or local farmers in support of campaign messages. For example: small scale evening get – together e.g. with pie and peas Mini SHADs Q&A events hosted by the stakeholder – perhaps piggy backing on regional meetings Materials will be tailored to audience Will include Campaign DVD, speaker notes, case studies and pop up stands for larger events Events

  12. May be hard copy or electronic – length to suit We will have a number of “off the peg” articles ready for use Case study based articles Can also assist with background for your own communications team to write Articles for Newsletters

  13. Section for Organisations to “sign up” as supporters – Promise Partners Access to materials for Promise Partners to spread the Make the Promise messages Individual farmers can show their support on the site too and access case studies and films. MTP Website

  14. Aim to widen acceptance of the knot and its meaning Range of possibilities: Digital knot for use on letter headings Pocket card for distribution at events Lapel badges Promise Knot related materials
